The Monastery of St. Nicholas of Badova / Nikolaus Kofina was founded c. 1400 in a rock cave at Badovas. Centuries ago, reaching this secluded skete was anything but easy. Monks entered through a cave below the cliff, using a wooden ladder to climb to the higher chambers carved into the rock. Nearby, on the same dramatic cliff face, you can still see the hermit caves of Agios Grigorios, or St. Gregory. The Badovas hermit caves are especially significant because they were home to some of the last hermit monks of Meteora, who lived here more than two centuries ago in complete isolation and devotion. Even today, traces of that extraordinary way of life remain. Old wooden ladders, platforms and scaffolding can still be seen clinging high to the cliffs of Pyxari, offering a powerful glimpse into the physical endurance and spiritual commitment of Meteora’s monks. Together with the small monastery nearby, the Badovas caves form one of Meteora’s most fascinating monastic sites.

Meteora day trip
The trip was excellent as was the tour guide in Meteora Would have liked a little information/history of the areas we were travelling through and an up front itinerary would have saved me wondering what next

Great guide and tour
Overall this was a great tour. The drive is 4 hours each way with stops half way. We got the tickets that included the meal and the food was not bad, entrees included chicken skewers, pork chop, chicken thigh and sides included rice, a variety of vegetables among other things. The tour guide joined the group at lunch and departed at the same place after the tour. Pick up was directly across from the bus station but just ask to make sure you get on the correct bus, they do have checklists. The guide was awesome and shared a lot of interesting info about the area and the monasteries. We booked this tour the night before and we were so glad, it is definitely worth it. You get to visit 3 monasteries and it is 5 euro per person per monastery to enter, cash only. The other 3 monasteries we just drove by or saw across the cliffs. Women must wear skirts that cover below the knee, which you can borrow, and must cover shoulders. The most steps we climbed was about 200 so not too bad. We stopped at several scenic spots to take picture. It is a very long tour 9am to about 10 or 11pm return depending on traffic which we did get stuck in and slowed us down but tour was still worth it.

It's worth
The bus was comfortable and the lunch was very good also. Meteora is amazing!

Gorgeous tour, beware of lots of stairs and pricy dinner spot
Vaso was an amazing tour guide! Super friendly and knowledgeable, and she shared just the right amount of information. It was a great tour, definitely recommend. Lunch was good, I recommend the chicken skewers (so good!). The dinner place they stopped at on the way back is very expensive (and not that great tasting, just ok) and I recommend you bring snacks instead. Or be ready to spend 55 euro for 2 people to have dry pork kabobs and French fries and Greek salad. Also, prepare for a long day with lots of stairs at the monasteries.

Every turn on the mountain, another picture opportunity
It's a 14 hour day. Leave at 9 AM, return at 11 PM. Competent drivers driving on narrow roads on the mountain. Meteora was beautiful. Took a zillion pictures. Lunch was OK and was served fast (buffet style).
