About this experience
Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world whose territory preserves evidence of human settlements starting from the Paleolithic and without interruptions up to the present day. It represents an extraordinary page written by man through the millennia of this very long history. World Heritage Site since 1993 and European Capital of Culture in 2019. With the classic and typical Ape Calessino (tuk tuk), an Italian myth, much appreciated by families, especially with children in wheelchairs, we will cross the Old Town and the Sassi, as they are very tiring on foot, especially in the summer, whizzing through the streets and characteristic alleys, making small stops for photos and videos and to visit churches in the squares and characteristic Case Grotte (Case Museo).

I wouldn’t waste my money
This was such a waste of time and money. We met our guide who spoke no English. You got into the tuk tuk and he pulled out a little speaker. The ride was a recorded Guide! Basic information we had already gotten from Wikipedia.. We stopped maybe 4. For a quick few minutes if that. Two stops to look at view. One to walk in a church by yourselves and other to stop in a cave that had Italian recorded in the house. You needed to wait a while for it to finish till the English came on. By that time it was so hot in cave and visually you could just figure out what the recording would say. At each of the sites to take a photo the guide didn’t even get out to take your picture. I had to ask both times. He was polite and always did however I shouldn’t have to ask. We also got stuck in traffic because there was a wreck and we were rerouted. That’s not the guides fault but just made the whole experience bad.. It was just a bad experience and a waste of money.

Matera Tuk Tuk - Definitely a Must Do!
Wonderful way to see the highlights of Matera! Do this as early as possible, to acquaint yourself to the labyrinth of streets in Matera. Our driver was great, stopping often for prime locations to take pictures.
Response from the operator: Grazie mille ☺️

Avoid this company.
The driver didn’t speak English. There were other Tuk Tuks tours going from same place that the drivers spoke English and gave a real tour. This was a recording off of a speaker. The worst part of it all. The tuk tuk says it fits 4 adults but it’s way too small. Again way better choices from what I saw and cheaper in price. Wouldn’t recommend this tour or tuk tuk company.
Response from the operator: Good morning. I would like to inform you that the Ape Calessino can carry a maximum of 4 adults. This model has three seats in the back and one in the front. We've been carrying four adults for years and have never had a complaint. Furthermore, our service does not include an English-speaking driver. But the service description on Viator clearly states that there's a pre-recorded audio guide. So next time, read carefully what a service offers before requesting it. However, it is strange to have tipped the driver for the service received...and then write a review like that... Thank you .

Good option to skip stairs
It was a last minute booking the night before but everything was great! Its a good option to see more of Matera if you want to skip the stairs, good thing we booked it because started raining a lot nd it was impossible to walk, we ended the tour wet but we did make it to the church and to the house museum. Our guide was amazing, he even drop us off at our car so we wouldnt walk under the rain.
Response from the operator: Grazie mille ☺️

Why this scores 59
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Ape Calessino Tour Matera Lungo: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Matera.
How much does Ape Calessino Tour Matera Lungo cost?
+
Prices start at $53 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Matera usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Ape Calessino Tour Matera Lungo take?
+
Plan for about 1 hour from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Matera is not rushed.
Is Ape Calessino Tour Matera Lungo worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 59 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.5/5 across 64 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Matera, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Ape Calessino Tour Matera Lungo?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Ape Calessino Tour Matera Lungo suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Ape Calessino Tour Matera Lungo?
+
Around 22 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Matera can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Matera and add a light layer if any part of the 1-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Ape Calessino Tour Matera Lungo start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Matera within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Matera?
+
On Outty we rank every Matera experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tour in the Sassi of Matera with Casa Grotta and Rock Church, Sassi di Matera guided tour with Giulio, Discover Matera, the ancient city - English tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Matera?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Matera?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
