A Beautiful Day Exploring the Islands of Angra dos Reis with our tour guide Nayt

Our Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande day tour from Rio de Janeiro was a long but truly wonderful day and a fantastic way to experience some of Brazil’s stunning coastal scenery. It was an early start, and even before the tour began we were reminded how vibrant Rio is in the morning. Copacabana beach before 7am was already full of life, joggers, volleyball, yoga and people enjoying the start of the day. The journey to Angra dos Reis takes a few hours, but once we arrived and boarded the boat it was absolutely worth it. The scenery is spectacular, with lush green islands rising out of clear blue water and beautiful swimming spots along the way. Our guide Nayt, in his bright pink t-shirt, was friendly and enthusiastic and helped keep the group organised throughout the day. The boat stops were a real highlight. Swimming in the warm water surrounded by tropical islands felt incredibly special, and enjoying a very strong caipirinha on the boat while taking in the views definitely added to the fun. One of my favourite moments was simply watching everyone enjoy themselves in such a beautiful setting. My partner John kept stepping in to take photos for people so they could capture their memories together, which really summed up the friendly atmosphere of the day. We also met a lovely couple from Mexico who added to the joy of sharing the experience with fellow travellers. The whole trip felt like a proper Brazilian adventure, boat rides, turquoise water, music, sunshine and incredible island views. If you are visiting Rio and want to experience Brazil’s beautiful coastline, this tour is a great way to spend the day. It’s long, but absolutely worth it for the scenery and the memories.

An experience with challenges...

Overall, our group made the best of the day and tried to enjoy the experience for what it was but of the 10 days that we were in Rio this was the bottom of the list. As other reviewers have noted, this was not a bilingual tour- our tour guide did not speak English- he said he was learning and did his best but this was definitely a challenge. We were the only English speakers on the tour. It also indicates that that the age limit is 10 but there was a baby in our group that sat directly behind us on the bus and at times was crying throughout the trip. They also mention that lunch is provided but please note that lunch means 4pm- not something we were thinking of and hadn't eaten when we left at 7am and thought we would be able to eat at noon. The ship did have food for purchase but again just not something we were planning for. Overall we went to nice places and the boat ride was an experience but as it mentioned there could be up to 120 on the boat and it definitely felt crowded. Despite the crowd, given no other English speakers we felt a little bit alone as well and at times instructions were given and then we had to wait for someone to bring a phone to translate or just go without knowing what was going on. The music was loud at times and others were drinking too much but it was nice to see that the bartenders did stop serving those that were well intoxicated.

Beautiful experience

The tour van was very punctual and Valber, our tour guide was very friendly. He was also bilingual so we didn't have any issues with communication (my friend and I speak Spanish as a first language and only a little Portuguese). The boat was big and had all the amenities (you do have to pay separately for drinks, food and floating vests). Our lunch was included with the tour price and was a buffet at the last stop, Bar de Luiz, there was a lot of variety and it was all delicious, we only had to pay separately for drinks and dessert. I definitely going for a swim at the last stop, it's breathtaking. We had an amazing day swimming with fishes and enjoy good food and beautiful views.

Great place to visit

The ceviche in the boat was wonderful. The ride on the boat was smooth and the places we stopped were really nice.

Great tour but book option without lunch.

The tour was very good and very fun. The choice of restaurant for the lunch included was not good. The food was not fresh and it was a buffet style. Everything else was fine.

Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande Day Trip from Rio de Janeiro: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rio de Janeiro.

How much does Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande Day Trip from Rio de Janeiro cost?

+

Prices start at $250 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rio de Janeiro usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande Day Trip from Rio de Janeiro take?

+

Plan for about 12 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rio de Janeiro is not rushed.

Is Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande Day Trip from Rio de Janeiro worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 52 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.7/5 across 72 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Rio de Janeiro, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande Day Trip from Rio de Janeiro?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande Day Trip from Rio de Janeiro suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 12-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande Day Trip from Rio de Janeiro?

+

Around 25 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rio de Janeiro can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rio de Janeiro and add a light layer if any part of the 12-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande Day Trip from Rio de Janeiro start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rio de Janeiro within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Rio de Janeiro?

+

On Outty we rank every Rio de Janeiro experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rio's Full Day: Selarón Steps, Christ & Sugarloaf – Tickets & Lunch Included, Rio: Tijuca Rainforest Hike, Wildlife, Waterfalls & Caves, Explore the Best of Tijuca Forest – Hike to Peaks, Caves & Falls. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Rio de Janeiro?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Rio de Janeiro?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
