What you get

    About this experience

Sherpa's Amsterdam food tour is a small-group walking tour that pairs authentic Dutch tastings with the city's culture and history. Your local guide leads you off the beaten path, through historic neighborhoods and the UNESCO canal ring, like a friend who knows every great spot. This isn't just a food tour. Every bite comes with a piece of Amsterdam: why herring is eaten with onions and pickles, how Surinamese and Indonesian flavors became Dutch staples, and what 400 years of canal-trade history taste like today. You'll sample local classics: aged Gouda, bitterballen, fresh herring, hand-cut fries, alongside local drinks, from milk to wine and beer. Come hungry: there's enough food to replace a meal. With a maximum of 10 guests, an intimate tour. We walk through the city and the canal belt, ending near the Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House. This is a Sherpa Food Tour, part of our global collection of High-Fidelity Local Experiences for curious travelers and passionate food lovers.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Waterlooplein Market

We meet outside a cozy café in Waterlooplein, once a canal and the heart of the Jewish quarter. Now a bustling market, it reflects Amsterdam’s layered, imperfect charm.

      15 minutes here

    2. We start underground — literally — with bold, bright Surinamese bites that hit hard with flavor and history. Born from migration, loved by locals, and hiding in plain sight.

      25 minutes here

    3. Bite into a hot, creamy veal croquette sandwich in a no-frills local favorite. Born after WWII, this iconic snack is pure Dutch comfort food, served with old-school character.

      20 minutes here

    4. Rokin

Just off the canal, a cozy spot channels the real spirit of Amsterdam—a new take on the classic brown café where tradition and trend meet. We stop here for classic Dutch snacks: pickled herring, grilled sausage, and a crisp local beer

      25 minutes here

    5. Amsterdam Canal Ring

Stroll Amsterdam’s iconic canal belt and uncover how 17th-century ingenuity shaped a floating city. From timber foundations to merchant houses, every view holds a story.

      30 minutes here

    6. Sample a four-cheese tasting board in one of Amsterdam’s top cheese shops. Every bite is rich with tradition, terroir, and the deep pride of Dutch artisanal dairy craft.

      20 minutes here

    7. The Jordaan

Step into the Jordaan, once home to workers and dreamers. Its cobbled streets now house artists, cafés, and locals — the perfect bridge between past and present Amsterdam.

      15 minutes here

    8. Singel

Savor modern Dutch cuisine with a soulful stamppot, made from seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients. Comforting, creative, and a glimpse into where Dutch food is headed. Next, we end the tour with a cozy Dutch dessert and a sip of jenever. It’s a sweet, spiced, and spirited goodbye in a warm setting that captures everything you’ve tasted and explored today.

Amsterdam Food Tour: Authentic Dutch Tastings, Canals & Culture: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Amsterdam.

How much does Amsterdam Food Tour: Authentic Dutch Tastings, Canals & Culture cost?

    +

Prices start at $99 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Amsterdam usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Amsterdam Food Tour: Authentic Dutch Tastings, Canals & Culture take?

    +

Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Amsterdam is not rushed.

Is Amsterdam Food Tour: Authentic Dutch Tastings, Canals & Culture worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 83 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 375 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Amsterdam, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Amsterdam Food Tour: Authentic Dutch Tastings, Canals & Culture?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Amsterdam Food Tour: Authentic Dutch Tastings, Canals & Culture suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Amsterdam Food Tour: Authentic Dutch Tastings, Canals & Culture?

    +

Around 131 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Amsterdam can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Amsterdam and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Amsterdam Food Tour: Authentic Dutch Tastings, Canals & Culture start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Amsterdam within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Amsterdam?

    +

On Outty we rank every Amsterdam experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Amsterdam Canal Cruise with Local Guide and Small Group, Guided Bike Tour of Amsterdam's Highlights & Hidden Gems, Amsterdam: Luxury Canal Cruise including Cocktails & Snacks. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Amsterdam?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Amsterdam?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
