Something you need to do in your lifetime

The boat ride was windy and cold (even though we went in August) take a sweatshirt. The views on the boat are amazing. Look at the water and how rough it is. You'll remember it when the tour audio talks about swimming/escape. Wear comfortable shoes, lots of walking up and downhill. Unimaginable living conditions, but then remember the time and dates, probably better than some had at home. We will be back, next time to do the night tour. That would be fun and probably spooky too!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for sharing such a detailed review! We’re glad you enjoyed the incredible views from the ferry and the unique experience of exploring Alcatraz. Your tips about bringing a sweatshirt, wearing comfortable shoes, and being prepared for the hills are very helpful for future visitors. The stories of the escape attempts and the conditions inside the prison certainly take on a different meaning once you experience the island and surrounding waters firsthand. We’re especially happy to hear that you’re planning to come back for the Night Tour. Thank you for choosing us, and we hope to see you again in the future for another memorable experience!

    NON REFUNDABLE

If you are going to book this make sure your dates are 100% as they will not give you a refund or let you change the dates. Booked in advance and tour operator changed the schedule last minute. Tried to change this booking to get "BOOKING NOT REFUNDABLE" so just make sure you can attend for 4 of us a very expensive lesson. As Viator is a TripAdvisor company, lets see how long this stays on here.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that the situation caused frustration and inconvenience. We would like to clarify that date changes can be accommodated depending on availability. Guests who need to modify their booking should contact us directly so our team can check the available options and assist whenever possible. Regarding refunds, our policy does not allow refunds within 48 hours of the scheduled tour, as tickets and reservations have already been secured for the booking. We always encourage guests to carefully review the cancellation and modification terms when making their reservation. We appreciate your comments and hope you will consider giving us another opportunity in the future so we can provide you with a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

    Alcatraz/Bay Tour

It was an awesome experience, very well made up. Was not sure how to get the second tour until I asked somebody from the company. They had told me I needed to go to another pier after I got done with the Alcatraz tour. We went to pier 39 and the lady at the ticket booth asked for our voucher and gave use tickets.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We’re delighted to hear that you had an awesome time and enjoyed the overall tour. We’re also glad our team was able to explain how to access the second part of the experience and direct you to Pier 39 to exchange your voucher for the additional cruise tickets. We truly appreciate your feedback and hope to see you again in the future for another enjoyable and memorable experience!

Just go through the Alcatraz tour company

Just get a regular ticket to Alcatraz. The bay cruise was like a side note that you’d have to chase down tickets for and go on a separate boat ride. Pretty sure I over paid for this tour when there was no coordination with a guide. You’re just part of the regular “heard” getting on and off the Alcatraz boat. Don’t get me wrong, we had a good time. But I paid a lot extra for nothing.

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Alcatraz, but we’re sorry that the overall package did not meet your expectations. The Alcatraz visit and Bay Cruise are separate experiences and may operate from different departure locations and schedules. We understand that this may not have been as clear or as convenient as you expected when booking. We also appreciate your comments regarding the value of the package and the level of coordination. Your feedback is important to us and will help us improve how the experience and inclusions are communicated to future guests. Thank you again for sharing your experience.

Alcatraz Visit with Night Option and SF Bay Cruise: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for San Francisco.

How much does Alcatraz Visit with Night Option and SF Bay Cruise cost?

    +

Prices start at $139 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in San Francisco usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Alcatraz Visit with Night Option and SF Bay Cruise take?

    +

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in San Francisco is not rushed.

Is Alcatraz Visit with Night Option and SF Bay Cruise worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 54 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.2/5 across 1,010 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in San Francisco, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Alcatraz Visit with Night Option and SF Bay Cruise?

    +

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is Alcatraz Visit with Night Option and SF Bay Cruise suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Alcatraz Visit with Night Option and SF Bay Cruise?

    +

Around 354 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in San Francisco can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in San Francisco and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Alcatraz Visit with Night Option and SF Bay Cruise start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central San Francisco within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in San Francisco?

    +

San Francisco packs Alcatraz, Muir Woods, Napa and the bay into day-trip range, which makes booking order matter more than anywhere else in the US. Alcatraz sells out weeks ahead, wine-country vans fill on weekends, and the best food walks in the Mission and Chinatown cap at a dozen people. Our ranking favours small groups and guides who live in the neighbourhood they walk. On Outty we rank every San Francisco experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Small Group Yosemite and Giant Sequoias Day Trip from San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge Muir Woods Sausalito with Optional Alcatraz, Chinatown, North Beach, Little Italy: 7 Tastings & History. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit San Francisco?

    +

September and October, the city's real summer, once the fog season breaks. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in San Francisco?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
