7 Great Days in Alaska
If you want to visit Alaska, but don’t want to include a crowded cruise, I have a suggestion. My wife and I spent 7 days in Alaska. We flew into Anchorage and used it as our base. From there we used the Alaska Railroad to get to both Denali National Park and to Seward. We booked our stay at the Wingate by Wyndham which is located about 3 blocks from the train station- walking distance! We arrived on a Sunday afternoon which gave us time to get familiar with Anchorage. The next morning we took the Alaska Railroad to Denali station. When I called the railroad to make reservations the agent advised me that they have Adventure Class- which was basic and fine or Gold Star Class which is an upgrade. Gold Star seats in the upper deck and includes a meal. When I spoke to the agent and told her our plans, she suggested Tundra Tours which include a more thorough tour of the park. We took her suggestion. When you arrive at the Anchorage station you drop your luggage off, tell them your hotel or lodge. They then tag your luggage and it is taken to your hotel. When our train arrived At Denali Station you walk up some steps and buses from the various lodges are waiting to bring you to your location. We booked our room at Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge. It was quite spacious with about 12 different lodges. There are also several shops, restaurants, and coffee shops. Tundra Tours picked us up at our lodge the second day (Tuesday) there. We saw a lot of scenery and some wildlife. The next day we took the train back to Anchorage. We spent a second night at the Wingate. The next morning we boarded another train to Seward. We booked the Breeze Inn. Like before we had our luggage tagged and it arrived safely at the Breeze Inn! That day we spent getting acquainted with Seward. Nice town and easy to get around without a car. Our hotel was an 5 minutes from the train station. If you want to travel to parts of the city they have free shuttle service. We booked a boat tour with Major Marine. Their office is a block from our hotel. The people at the Breeze Inn were great and made sure our luggage got to the train while we were on our boat tour. The boat tour was the highlight of our week’s trip. We saw wildlife like otters , porpoises, seals, sea lions, and both Killer and Humpback whales!! We also got very close to a couple of glaciers-closer than the huge tour ships can get. When we got off the boat we went right to the train. They organized the tour so we wouldn’t miss our train. I want to add the train rides were very scenic and there was plenty of leg room. There were plenty of opportunities for pictures. We took the train back to Anchorage for a third night. The next day our hotel brought us back to the airport. If you want to visit Alaska without the boat cruise I suggest give this plan a try.
