Afternoon Ayutthaya heritage site & River Boat Ride at Sunset

Interesting Sites, But Serious Safety Concerns

The sites themselves were interesting, and our guide was kind and courteous. However, I ultimately felt that the way this tour was handled put us in an unnecessarily dangerous situation, and that is difficult to overlook when reviewing a guided tour. First, the tour description does not make it clear that there is approximately a 90-minute drive to reach the first site. As a tourist unfamiliar with the area, I would not necessarily realize this from the description. If a significant portion of the tour involves a long drive, I would also expect the guide to provide some context along the way, such as pointing out notable buildings, regions, or places of significance. We asked several questions during the drive but unfortunately received very little information. More importantly, the weather created a serious safety concern. Our guide had predicted that thunderstorms were coming, yet the itinerary was not adjusted accordingly. We were able to spend some time at the first temple, had to rush through the second, and then attempted to reach the third site by longboat as the storm was approaching. By that point, there was lightning, thunder, very poor visibility, and increasingly dangerous conditions on the water. What concerned me most was that, despite the conditions, the guide appeared prepared to continue. I was the one who ultimately asked that we turn around. As a tourist, that is a position I should not have had to put myself in. I am unfamiliar with the area, the waterways, the weather patterns, and the local risks. That is precisely why we pay for a guided tour and trust the person leading it to make informed safety decisions. I also understand that changing or canceling an itinerary can be difficult, particularly when a guide is concerned about having to reschedule or refund guests. However, protecting the guests' safety needs to take priority over completing the itinerary. In this situation, I would have much rather had the guide proactively recommend turning back, changing the order of the sites, rescheduling, or offering a refund than continue into conditions that were clearly becoming hazardous. Ironically, because the guide had already anticipated thunderstorms, it may have made more sense to visit the more distant sites first and return before the weather deteriorated. Instead, we ended up rushing through portions of the tour and then attempting what I felt was an unnecessarily dangerous boat journey in a storm. I considered giving this tour a lower rating because of the safety issue. The sites were worthwhile, and I have no complaint about the guide personally. They were kinda nd knowledgable. But kindness is not the same as making the necessary safety decision. When tourists hire a guide, we are relying on that person not only to show us the sites but also to understand circumstances that we, as visitors, cannot reasonably assess ourselves. I hope the company takes this feedback seriously, particularly regarding weather-related decisions and when a tour should be altered, postponed, or canceled. No itinerary is worth putting guests in danger.

Great tour

We had a wonderful afternoon in Ayutthaya. The temples were beautiful and the sunset river cruise was very relaxing. Our guide, Oil, was especially excellent—friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful throughout the tour. Highly recommended!

Amazing walking, riding, boating tour.

Excellent value for the money. Took most of the day and was VERY informative and enlightening. Our guide was professional, friendly and very knowledgeable. The driver was safe, helpful and very friendly. Overall a marvelous experience and a great peek into Thai culture and history. There was a lot of information presented, but also a lot of space and time to explore on your own.

Ayutthaya trip

This was a brilliant trip to Ayutthaya with a great river cruise at sunset. Our guide, Chaiwat was brilliant - full of knowledge and explained about all the sites fully. He was helpful with taking family photos and explained a lot about Buddhism and the history of the area so we could appreciate what we were seeing. This is a great trip and I would recommend it.
