Explore this lush area surrounded by beautiful jungles, and the cave entrance is traversed by swimming across a crystal clear spring fed pool. Taking a journey into the Maya underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre” for one of the most enlightening, epic and unique experiences of your life. Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the heart of the ATM Cave with your licensed guide. Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts, as well as a sacred burial place. This is the final resting place of “Crystal Maiden,” an ancient Maya ceremonial victim, as well as the remains of 13 other sacrificed men, women and children. Your professional guides have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave. This sacrificial site is accessed by a 45 minute drive from our office in San Ignacio.

Here we enter the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and park our vehicles at the ranger post. From this point on we are on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave. To access the cave we swim across a small spring- fed pool and wade into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics, the famed crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden”. We spend approximately 3 hours in the cave at the guidance of our experienced guides. We enter back into the jungle world and hike to our vehicles where we relax and enjoy a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before driving back to San Ignacio. Difficulty level: Moderate (involved some easy swimming and life jackets are provided for non-swimmers, who will also be escorted by our highly trained guide).

Amazing Guide Christopher & Super Adventurous
We had such a good experience. Our guide Christopher was amazing. He helped me so much. I just got knee surgery five months ago and he was so kind and considerate. He was really knowledgeable. Overall, I really enjoyed our adventurous this tour was. I highly recommend. Also the lunch after was so delicious!!

Unforgettable

The cave has been temporarily closed to visitors before, and who knows how long we will continue to have the incredible privilege of experiencing a place like this up close. Fingers crossed it remains open for a very long time, as long as people continue to respect and protect it. This experience was absolutely unbelievable. Not only are you going on a wild adventure through an incredible cave system with guides who genuinely respect and honor this sacred place, but you will stand just feet away from human remains and artifacts that are more than a thousand years old, many still resting where they were left by the ancient Maya. It is honestly hard to describe how special that feels. Our guide, Cristian, was spectacular. He was extremely charismatic, kept us laughing, made us feel safe throughout the entire adventure, and had fascinating information for us every step of the way. Richard was another MayaWalk guide who spoke with us during the hour long ride from San Ignacio, and he was also incredible. He is an enthusiastic conservationist and wildly knowledgeable about Maya history, as well as the trees, birds, insects, and wildlife surrounding the cave. He is just an amazing person to be around and learn from. The lunch afterward was amazing too. Seriously, do not second guess it. If you are going to visit ATM Cave, these are your guys. This was easily one of the most unforgettable experiences of our entire trip.

Astounding ATM Cave Tour Led by Francis- an incredibly knowledge guide!!!!
My husband and I did the ATM Cave tour on August 2026, and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life and completely unforgettable. Mayawalk is incredible, and our crew made the whole day absolute perfection. Mr. Hugh started us off on the right foot by giving us all the important instructions on the bus so we knew exactly what we were getting into and how to keep the cave protected. Mr. Ball got us there and back safely and smoothly as our driver, which is no small feat. Once we got to the cave, Francis was our guide, and he was just phenomenal. Francis handled the site with an immense amount of respect, reverence, and fascinating historical context, helping us understand the profound spiritual weight of what we were looking at. His expertise, combined with how safely and comfortably he navigated us through the tight spaces and rushing waters, made the historical journey just as impactful as the physical adventure itself. And then after all that swimming and hiking, Brittany fed us a tasty lunch back at camp. If you're doing this tour, you need to book with Mayawalk and hope you get this exact team because they are the absolute best!
