Rio Secreto PLUS Tour
My fiancé and I initially wanted to book the WILD tour but due to the busy season, that option wasn’t available to us. We ended up booking the PLUS tour. We went in December 2023. Such a cool experience. The actual place was approx 7km away from the meeting point and what was nice is that there was a central point where we can leave our belongings in the lockers and after every activity, we were able to go back to our lockers and change if needed. Parking is available at the meeting point. We brought some of our own snorkel gear but there was no time allocated for snorkeling the cenote. Every activity was a guided tour and it was great to hear the history of the cenotes which briefly touched on some Mayan history. Jorge was a great, funny and personable tour guide. Knowledgeable. He ensured everyone was comfortable. The photos were pretty expensive and you cannot bring your camera in or your phone in. They’re pretty strict about it. They had a photographer with us during the tour and got the option to purchase at the end of the tour. Again, I thought the photos were expensive but ended up spending the money to keep the memories in the photos. Overall a great experience! Ask for Jorge of the Jungle, to get Jorge as your guide!! :)
Response from the operator: Hello Maria! We are glad to know that your experience was great. We look forward to seeing you again for other wonderful experiences in the Mexican Caribbean. Thank you for your preference. Have a great day!

Do this you won’t regret it.
We started the day from our hotel in Playa Del Carmen at 8:05- the tour says 9 but we got picked up at 8:05. It took about 45 minutes to get to Rio Secreto. Get off the bus and wait about another half hour to get assigned a guide. Get in another van to drive another 10 minutes on a bumpy road in the jungle with low air conditioning. I am saying this for complainers so you are aware, we were fine. This tour was incredible, it really filled my soul up. After we got to Rio Secreto we got lockers and then went for a walk on a sidewalk through caves with a story on provided headphones. Then we got on bicycles and rode on a rocky, potholed road to the rappelling. You rappel into the cave and it is mostly open air. It was very unfamiliar to me so it was adrenaline filled. It should be noted we got a banana at this spot, it was probably around 11:30am. We rode the bicycles on the same road back to the locker area and geared up to go into the caves. They provide a wetsuit, shoes, helmet with light, and life jacket. It is maybe a 5 minute walk to the cave. The cave his rough uneven slippery surface you have to duck and walk, it has not been developed. A lot of places you cannot see the ground because of water so it is a slow exploration. You have to do this. Nothing in your life will be like this, it is an actual cave that has not been overhauled for a nice comfortable walk. The water was cool and refreshing. You can reach the bottom in most places. When you come back up it was around 3pm and you are hungry! You head over and try their liquor- it’s delicious. Head inside to buy photos and eat lunch. Lunch was buffet style, the food wasn’t hot but it was delicious. We were back at our resort by 5pm. The website says 11 hours it was about 8. This was more physically active than I anticipated but I enjoy physical activity so it was fine. You can’t take your phone on the activities so ask the photographer to take pictures of what you want. Our group of 4 purchased them for $135 USD. The other 7 purchased them for $150. The prices are not set. Go through the photos on the computer to make sure they are all there. It may not sound amazing due to all of the details but it really was. We made new friends, laughed a lot, and just explored the wonder and beauty of nature. 10/10 recommend.

Impressive caves
The tour is amazing and the oportunity to explore these caves is really unique. The caves are impressive, in some sections you need to swim and although there are some narrow pass throughs it's quite accesible

Why this scores 67
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
A secret river tour! Explore the nature wonders of Riviera Maya: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tulum.
How much does A secret river tour! Explore the nature wonders of Riviera Maya cost?
+
Prices start at $89 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tulum usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does A secret river tour! Explore the nature wonders of Riviera Maya take?
+
Plan for about 11 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tulum is not rushed.
Is A secret river tour! Explore the nature wonders of Riviera Maya worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 67 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 13 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Tulum, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule A secret river tour! Explore the nature wonders of Riviera Maya?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is A secret river tour! Explore the nature wonders of Riviera Maya suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 11-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book A secret river tour! Explore the nature wonders of Riviera Maya?
+
Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tulum can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tulum and add a light layer if any part of the 11-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does A secret river tour! Explore the nature wonders of Riviera Maya start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tulum within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Tulum?
+
On Outty we rank every Tulum experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tulum Ruins, Turtles in Akumal and Cenote tour, Tulum Guided Tour, Magical Cenote, Lagoon Snorkeling and Beachside Lunch, Chichén Itzá, Cenote and Valladolid with Lunch and transportation. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Tulum?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Tulum?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
