Excellent driver and guide but AWFUL 4x4 Tozeur Excursions Planning

I am giving a 5-star rating solely for the driver, Mr. Adem (From KHRIBICH Car Rental); the SAHARANSKY guide, Mr. Faycel and the admin, Miss Nadine. My driver (Mr. Adem) has been very helpful since the moment he picked me up from Tunis–Carthage Airport in the early hours of nearly 2AM and safely transferring me to the hotel. Upon arrival, he also assisted in sorting out my hotel reservations. Throughout my 8D7N private tour, he was always punctual, arriving on time or even earlier every day. On the last day, he also dropped me safely back at the airport. Mr. Faycel was a kind and great guide throughout the trip. He is knowledgeable about all the sites we visited and is also a very good photographer, which I truly appreciated. Miss Nadine was very helpful in resolving the hiccups that occurred during the trip and provided timely support. The negative side for my trip was happened on 30 Dec 2025 (Tuesday) for the Tozeur excursion visiting (Tamerza/Chebika/Mides Cayon) was supposed to be a private tour with a 4x4 vehicle. Instead, the trip was conducted using a normal car and I was also asked to share the tour with another traveler from the USA. Moreover, without the 4x4 vehicle. We have no choice to skip part of the desert sites such as Ong Jemel. Please understand clearly that I paid for a private tour with a 4x4 and this should have been arranged in advance, especially since I booked my SAHARANSKY trip a long time ago. The explanation given by Mr. Mustapha that it is peak season and all 4x4 vehicles were fully booked which is unacceptable. What kind of excuse is this? This feels like a clear attempt to take advantage of me. I was charged for a private tour with a 4x4, but ended up on a shared tour WITHOUT a 4x4 vehicle. This is a complete disaster and far below acceptable service standards.

Best Trip Ever - Underrated Country

An absolutely wonderful experience!! Boutheina and our driver took care of us extremely well and went above and beyond to drive us to a Star Wars film site near Tozeur that was not originally on the itinerary. They listened to our requests and delivered extremely well. Boutheina, the guide, was extremely well-versed in all of the sites we visited and kept good company as we traveled with her day and night throughout the Sahara. I would rate 5.5 stars if I could. Truly amazed by this country and all the excellent things it had to offer!

Loved our visit in Tunisia with Saharansky

We toured all over from Tunis, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, Dougga, Berber villages, Star Wars Village and sites, The English Patient desert sites, camel ride in Sahara, and many more cultural experiences. Our guide was an exceptional proud Tunisian / Berber woman by the name of Bouthenia. She was a wealth of knowledge and very kind.

Response from the operator: Dear Dr Richard, Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience with us. We are delighted to hear that your tour of Tunisia was so enriching and diverse. From the historic sites of Tunis, Carthage, and Dougga to the picturesque Sidi Bou Said and the unique Berber villages, it sounds like you experienced the very best of the beautiful Tunisia. We are particularly pleased to know that Bouthenia, your guide, contributed significantly to your journey. Her knowledge and kindness reflect the warm hospitality we strive to offer all our guests. Your camel ride in the Sahara and visits to the Star Wars Village and The English Patient desert sites add a unique and adventurous aspect to your cultural exploration, making your trip truly unforgettable. Thank you once again for choosing to explore Tunisia with us. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back for more adventures in the future. Warm regards, Khalid

    Incredible immersive experience

This was the most perfectly organised and implemented tour I have done. My wife and I are in our late 50s and not in the most athletic of condition. We loved it. So what do you actually get? 7 nights at good quality 4* hotels around the country. Breakfast and dinner buffet meals. Lunch on the road. Skilled drivers of comfortable modern landcruisers. Expert tour guide who knows his own country and wants to explain it to you. Entry fees to sites. Excellent range of historical, cultural and geographical experiences. There are some serious WTF moments in this tour! For me the tophet of Carthage, the Bardo Museum, Dougga’s THIS.IS.ROME. temple of the Capitoline Trinity, the Kairouan mosque, the sunset in the Saharan desert (yes, its worth the 4 hour trip through the sand dunes.), the alien landscapes just…yes. Now the downside points: 1. This requires a lot of walking and an element of fitness to enjoy. You don’t have to be an athlete but there are lots of steps. A fat, white guy managed it. 2. The drive into the desert is also challenging. 3. If you are a pale white guy like me, beware the sun. You must wear a hat. Screen up. 4. The food is plentiful and good quality but your gut bacteria may not be friendly with the locals. Bring Imodium or equivalent. I lasted until Day 5 before too much harissa intake got me (and i like spice). 5. Drinks are extra, payable at the hotel. There is a sort of beer, Celtia, available and some very good red wines, (e.g. Mago) but we mostly stuck with bottled water. This is an Islamic culture and not all restaurants have alcohol. Oddly, diet drinks are also rare. The water is fine. 6. Information Overload! To me this was completely new. A strange alien world. By the time you’re standing on a sand dune that you have previously only seen in Nat Geo images, well, your head will be so full of data that you will feel stunned. I am quite serious. This is a fully immersive experience. 7. The insects bite. Make sure you have repellant and antihistamines. As long as you do, you will be fine. General recommendation: It’s ok. You don’t have to buy a carpet unless you want to. ;-) There are shopping opportunities along the way but not high pressure ones. Tipping is welcome and reasonable. The general principle of giving to non-aggressive beggars is also a nice thing to do and appreciated by the locals. Horde your small notes and coins. This is an Islamic culture. Their culture, their rules. Dress modestly where needed. My wife kept a headscarf in her handbag so we could visit some of the special places. Their beliefs and opinions won’t necessarily match yours but that’s why you’re here isn’t it? They’re nice people. If you don’t speak Arabic, touch up on your French. Very useful. I cannot praise Saharan Sky highly enough for this experience.

Response from the operator: Dear Mike, Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and insightful review of your tour with us. We are thrilled to hear that you and your wife had an enjoyable experience. Your praise for the organization and implementation of the tour, as well as the quality of the accommodations, meals, and activities, is greatly appreciated. We're glad that you found the drivers skilled, the guide knowledgeable, and the experiences enriching. We acknowledge the points you mentioned about the physical demands of the tour and the need for fitness, sun protection, and other practical considerations. These are valuable tips for future travelers, and we will ensure to communicate these aspects. We are also happy to hear that the cultural immersion and unique experiences left a lasting impression on you. The "WTF moments" you described are exactly what we aim to provide – unforgettable memories that go beyond the ordinary. Thank you for your kind words about our local culture and your respectful approach to it. We believe that understanding and appreciating the local customs enriches the travel experience. We are delighted that you found the tour rewarding and that you hold SaharanSky in high regard. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you on another adventure soon! Warm regards, The SaharanSky Team

I cannot recommend this trip highly enough

As an avid independent traveller for over 35 years, I was impressed with the exceptional variety of cultural and culinary experiences, as well as the physical adventures, we had on this tour of Tunisia. Our tour leader Mustapha was intelligent, witty, well-connected and clearly well-respected by all the locals we interacted with on our trip. He taught us all so much, and facilitated some extraordinary experiences that will stay with me for life. My fellow travellers were a wide spectrum of ages, but of similar mindset, values and physical capability...which provided an abundance of good natured banter and laughs...and hopefully some enduring friendships. I cannot recommend this trip highly enough.

Response from the operator: Dear Kayla, Thank you so much for your fantastic feedback ! We work hard to meet high standards like yours, and we're happy to hear we did so. We appreciate seeing our guests have a pleasant experience, thanks to our excellent guides, drivers and entire team, who guarantee that our guests have the greatest possible experiences. We will be sure to let our team know that they made an impact during your tour with us. We really appreciate you being a loyal guest and helping to share the word about us. We’re here for you anytime. We hope to see you again soon with us. SAHARANSKY Team

8 Days Tunisia Essential Discovery Private Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tunis.

How much does 8 Days Tunisia Essential Discovery Private Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $2,462 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tunis usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does 8 Days Tunisia Essential Discovery Private Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 192 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tunis is not rushed.

Is 8 Days Tunisia Essential Discovery Private Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 64 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 17 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable outdoors in Tunis, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule 8 Days Tunisia Essential Discovery Private Tour?

    +

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is 8 Days Tunisia Essential Discovery Private Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 192-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book 8 Days Tunisia Essential Discovery Private Tour?

    +

Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tunis can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tunis and add a light layer if any part of the 192-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tunis within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tunis?

    +

On Outty we rank every Tunis experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Walking Tour through the Medina of Tunis(Pay what you want), Private tour: Medina,Carthage ,Sidi Bou Said, Bardo Museum+lunch, Private Excursion to Testour, Dougga and Bulla Regia from Tunis.. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tunis?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tunis?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
