About this experience
This non-technical Kilimanjaro camping route is one of the most popular and commonly referred to as the ‘whisky’ route due to its popularity and strong nature of the route. Machame starts at the southwest mountain rain forest and involves steep and challenging hikes on the southern circuit which is well designed for acclimatization with natural features taking you high and low. Although this is a non-technical route, there is a small ‘scrambling’ (using your hands and legs) section at the Barranco wall which truly gives you that mountain climbing feeling without any special equipment or experience.

7-Day Kilimanjaro Machame circuit climb
Our Kilimanjaro trek via the 7-day Machame Route was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The admission fee for our group of 12 was included in the tour package. The route itself was breathtaking, with incredible scenery that changed every day—from lush rainforest and dramatic valleys to rocky alpine landscapes and the spectacular summit views above the clouds. What truly made the trip exceptional was the professionalism and kindness of the Shah Tour and guides with special mention of Matheyo. The Matheyo and team was organized, supportive, and attentive throughout the hike. Our guides set a steady, comfortable pace, constantly checked on everyone’s wellbeing, and shared valuable encouragement and knowledge about the mountain. Their experience and calm leadership gave us confidence, especially on the more challenging summit night. The porters and camp crew also deserve enormous appreciation. They worked incredibly hard to make sure we were comfortable, well fed, and prepared each day. The meals were delicious and surprisingly varied for a mountain trek, and the camps were always ready when we arrived. Reaching Uhuru Peak was one of the proudest moments of our lives, and we could not have done it without this amazing team. We highly recommend this company to anyone planning to climb Kilimanjaro on the Machame Route. Their care, expertise, and genuine commitment to their guests made this adventure truly special.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for this wonderful and detailed review! We’re delighted to hear that your 7 day Machame climb was such a memorable experience, from the changing scenery along the route to that very special moment of reaching Uhuru Peak. A special thank you as well for recognising Matheyo and the rest of the guiding team. Their steady pacing, close attention to everyone’s wellbeing and support throughout the climb are such important parts of a successful Kilimanjaro experience, especially during the tougher sections and summit night. We’re also very pleased that you appreciated the tremendous work of the porters, cooks and camp crew behind the scenes. They put a huge amount of effort into keeping everyone comfortable, well fed and ready for each new day on the mountain. Congratulations to all 12 of you on reaching the summit, and thank you again for choosing Shah Tours and for recommending us so highly. We’ll be very happy to share your kind words with Matheyo and the entire team. Warm wishes from everyone at Shah Tours!

I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Joker as the main tour operator and Shah Tours as the local partner. GREAT MEMORIES FROM RICHARD & NOEL
I did a hike with Shah tours and it was absolutely incredible, from day 1 to the last day it was nothing short of amazing. We met with our head guide(Noel) at the hotel the day before, he went over everything from top to bottom of how the experience was going to be, he inspected our gears to make sure we were ready. The next day we met other crew members, including the other guide, Richard. All the crew members were very happy and always smiling all the time. Noel and Richard are passionate about their work and very knowledgeable mountain guides I have ever met. We did a Machame route and since day one you could always tell that we were going to have the best trip throughout. Noel was the informative one, who always explained to us about the routes and how everything is being done at the camp. Richard even though he was sometimes informative one but he was the one who had a good sense of humor, story telling about the chaga and masai tribal wars. Plus he was the honest and a straight forward kinda guy, always tells the real truth no matter how hard it was to hear about it. Noel was a diplomatice guide who always motivates you but doesn't want us(Me and other solo hike who joined the trip) to worry about what comes ahead. Richard was straight forward and always told us what was ahead, what to expect and how to go about it for us to be able to get to the top without any problems. Richard also has a very good english compared to other guides on the mountain including Noel. He is the only Tanzanian person I met on the mountain whom could answer the question and you would get what he is saying straight away compared to other people where you would have to listen careful or ask them to repeat so you can grasp what they are saying. He is the only person whom you can have a conversation and not worrying about explaining it twice since he listens and always understands. So in general both guides were incredible in there on way. The summit night, I didn't have a lot of strength to keep up with my fellow solo hiker, so Richard immediately suggested that we split, that Noel stays with me and he can go ahead with the other hiker, reason behind is every person adapts on their way, and if we limit somebody's pace then at the end they might be affected more and not be able to get to the summit. I agree and it was a good thing since the pressure to keep up with the other hiker dropped and I managed to focus on my breathing, which at the end of the day we both got to the summit, thanks to Richard for the suggestion and for Noel staying by me and setting up a good pace. The food was incredible throughout and always tasty, too bad we were always full and sometimes no appetite at all. Thank you Shah tours for organizing this incredible trip and thank you Richard for the fun moments, incredible conversations and good sense of humor, Noel thank you for setting a good pace for me on the summit night, the chef for the food and the whole crew for carrying all the luggages and managing everything at the camp. When you climb Kilimanjaro with Shah tours, don't forget to ask for Richard, a very good dude you will ever encounter. PS: Richard thank you for the safari hat gift you gave me after the trip on last day.
Response from the operator: Dear Thomawal, Thank you so much for this incredibly detailed and heartfelt review. It truly means a lot to us that you took the time to share your experience. We’re absolutely thrilled to hear that your Kilimanjaro climb via the Machame Route was such a memorable journey from start to finish. Richard and Noel are indeed exceptional guides, and your kind words perfectly capture their unique strengths Noel’s calm, motivating presence and Richard’s honesty, humor, and storytelling. We’re especially glad to hear how well they supported you during summit night; those moments can be challenging, and it’s wonderful to know their teamwork helped you both reach the top successfully. Your appreciation for the entire crew, including the chef and porters, will mean a great deal to them as well. They work incredibly hard behind the scenes to ensure every trek is comfortable, safe, and enjoyable. And we’re happy to hear about the safari hat—Richard will definitely be smiling when he hears that! Thank you once again for choosing Shah Tours and for recommending us. We hope to welcome you back for another adventure in Tanzania someday. Warm regards, Shah Tours Team

BEST AMBASSADOR MOUNTAIN GUIDE RICHARD
Amazing experience I have ever experience on the mountain. I met with Richard, my guide a day before the trip, who you can tell is a wonderful, amazing and considerate guy, could ask for more. Since I just finished my business meetings in Arusha and just arrived in Moshi, I needed some rest, and Richard immediately realized that. He did explain the most important details of the trek and inspected my gears real quick and gave me some time to recuperate before my big adventure. The next day, the entire team arrived at the lodge on time, ready for the trip of my life. Richard is so passion by his job and you can tell on how he explains the mountain, culture and the way of life in Tanzania, a true ambassador guide I can say. The overall trekking experience was amazing, the team and how they interacted with each other was wonderful. Richard as their leader, communicated with them smoothly and every was a 10 star experience. Sometimes leaders don't interact with their team members, but how Richard was helping in small matter and the happiness that was always around this team you could always see it around the kitchen tent, was amazing. The food was always there, I don't know why I didn't gain some weight especially to the fact that I was over fed at all times. The information from Richard was clearly and I did like the fact that he was direct and always tells me the truth no matter how hard the answer may be and that motivated me in some way. He clearly knows what he is doing and very good english compared to other guides from different companies, He is someone you can always talk to, and not worrying that he may not understand or have to rephrase it to make it easy for me, which was what other clients were experiencing most of the times and hard to repeat now and then. Couldn't ask for a better guide. I was thinking of skipping a camp on day 4 and head straight to the base camp, since I was feeling energetic, but Richard advised against it, and I was truly happy later on after getting to the base camp the next day and didn't manage to get some sleep, and the summit night was one of the very challenging things I have ever done. If I had forced and skip the camp, I am not sure if I could have made it to the summit, thanks Richard. After the summit, on the way down I decided I can go all the way out and fly the same day. Richard is really a hero, he managed to find a good connection now and then just for me to be able to change my flight, he managed to talked to the office last minute for them to organize everything and take me to the airport. Thanks to Shah tours for their prompt response and organization, I managed to fly out the same day without any problems at all. The whole Kilimanjaro team whom were comfortable and willing to carry all the luggages from the base camp to the gate are one among the amazing human beings I have ever met. So once again thank you Shah tours, Kilimanjaro team and most importantly to Richard for all he did to make sure I was safe throughout this trek. Best guide you will ever encounter and ask for him whenever you are hiking with Shah tours.
Response from the operator: Wow! Thank you so much for this incredible review. It truly means a lot to all of us at Shah Tours. We’re especially proud to hear your kind words about Richard. He really is a special guide, knowledgeable, honest, and deeply committed to both his clients and his team. The way you described his care, leadership, and passion captures exactly what we strive for on every climb. We’ll be sure to pass your message on to him - it will mean a great deal. It’s also wonderful to hear that the whole team made such a strong impression, from the smooth organization to the atmosphere around camp (and yes - our mountain food does have a way of keeping everyone very well fed!). Your note about pacing and acclimatization is spot on as well those decisions can make all the difference on summit night, and we’re glad Richard guided you the right way. We’re also pleased we could assist with your last-minute flight changes our team always does their best to support clients, even beyond the mountain. Thank you again for trusting us with your Kilimanjaro adventure. It was a pleasure to have you with us, and we hope to welcome you back to Tanzania in the future perhaps for a safari next time! Warm regards, Shah Tours Team

Why this scores 77
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
7 Day Kilimanjaro Machame climb: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Moshi.
How much does 7 Day Kilimanjaro Machame climb cost?
+
Prices start at $2195 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Moshi usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does 7 Day Kilimanjaro Machame climb take?
+
Plan for about 168 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Moshi is not rushed.
Is 7 Day Kilimanjaro Machame climb worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 77 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 21 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Moshi, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule 7 Day Kilimanjaro Machame climb?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is 7 Day Kilimanjaro Machame climb suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 16. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 168-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book 7 Day Kilimanjaro Machame climb?
+
Around 7 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Moshi can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Moshi and add a light layer if any part of the 168-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does 7 Day Kilimanjaro Machame climb start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Moshi within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Moshi?
+
On Outty we rank every Moshi experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Kilimanjaro climb, Lemosho Route (8-day), Materuni Waterfall, Coffee Tour and Picnic Hot Lunch, Kilimanjaro climb by Lemosho Route (7-day). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Moshi?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Moshi?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
