    I had an absolutely...

I had an absolutely fantastic day with Bony and Kevin. From the moment of pick up I had an excellent experience. He even let me stay and have some breakfast as my hostel didn’t start serving until 8am when I was due for pick up. The ride to the materuni village was bumpy but offered excellent views of Kilimanjaro along the way. Once to the village they provided a bottle of water before the hike to the waterfall. Kevin was so informative and made sure I was good every step of the way to the waterfall, he even carried my bag on the way back. He also took so many photos for me which was nice as a solo traveling. He also pointed out so many chameleon and plants along the hike. The hike itself is not too bad as he made sure I got plenty of breaks along the way back up to the village. Bony did an excellent job with the coffee tour explaining the process very well. The guys also took a ton of photos and videos for me which were so good! I’m not a big coffee drinker unless I have cream and sugar but the coffee was excellent with some sugar. It’s all organic as the government does not allow chemicals and it tastes delicious. They offer bags of coffee for sale and it was an excellent gift for the coffee drinkers in my family. The lunch was also very good and had the best options of any tour for a vegetarian. They also dropped me off and the nail salon after the tour instead of my hotel was was really nice. Absolutely recommend!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful review and recommendation! We’re delighted you enjoyed the waterfall hike, coffee experience, and local lunch. It was a pleasure hosting you, and we’re happy we could make your solo adventure special. We hope to welcome you back to Materuni in the future!

An amazing and authentic experience! ☕🌿❤️

We had such a great time at Materuni! Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the whole experience felt very familiar and personal. The coffee tour was super interesting, especially learning how they make everything themselves by hand. The homemade food on the family farm was delicious and made with so much love. You can really feel the passion and hospitality behind everything they do. A truly special experience and an absolute must-do when visiting Moshi! 🇹🇿❤️ Highly recommended!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your beautiful review! ❤️☕🌿 We’re so happy you enjoyed the authentic coffee experience, delicious homemade food, and warm Chagga hospitality. At Materuni Village Heritage, we believe guests should feel like family, not just tourists. 🇹🇿❤️ It was a pleasure welcoming you, and we hope to see you again someday. Karibu tena!

Disappointing experience with a disengaged guide

The pickup and transfer to the hike were pleasant, but our guide was completely uninterested. He hiked at a really fast pace and wouldn't stop, even when part of our group was left behind. We were a group of six hikers around 30 years old, so we could keep his pace, but there was literally no time to stop, take pictures, or enjoy the views. We only got to take photos when we were right in front of the waterfalls. Once we were there, the guide just sat on his phone waiting for us. Then we went for lunch and the coffee tour, which was more enjoyable. But again, the guide walked away, left us to eat, and was on his phone most of the time, so there wasn't much opportunity to interact or ask questions. He only showed up to ask if we wanted to try some banana beer. He never mentioned there was a surcharge (it is mentioned in the tour description here, but he offered it in a way that didn't imply an additional cost). He just showed up with two small bottles and only then mentioned the price was "only" $5 per bottle. The coffee tour included preparing a few cups of coffee together with a group of locals who were singing, and this was the most fun part. The coffee was good, but a large portion of the time was spent on them showing us what we could buy. Selling coffee bags at $14 USD per bag is much, much more expensive than in town. Technically they provided both tours, but the overall experience was very unsatisfactory. I would advise looking for another tour provider or, at the very least, requesting a different guide (Not sure, but I think ours was named Baraka).

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your honest feedback. We sincerely apologize that your experience did not meet your expectations. Our guides should always be attentive, keep the group together, allow time to enjoy the views, and be available to answer questions. We are sorry this was not your experience. We will address these concerns with our team to help prevent this from happening again. We also appreciate your positive comments about the coffee experience and traditional songs. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we hope to have another opportunity to provide you with the welcoming, authentic Materuni experience you deserve.

    Amazing experience!

We had an amazing experience visiting Materuni village, waterfalls and the coffee farm with Boni and his brothers. They were all very kind and welcoming, and very careful motorbike drivers! We really enjoyed the lunch and the coffee preparation, as well as the hike to the Materuni waterfalls. Totally recommended!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your kind words! It was a pleasure welcoming you to Materuni. We’re happy you enjoyed the waterfall, coffee experience, and traditional lunch. Karibu tena—you come as a tourist, you leave as family!

Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Moshi.

How much does Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $30 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Moshi usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Moshi is not rushed.

Is Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 90 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 92 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Moshi, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour?

    +

Around 32 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Moshi can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Moshi and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Plantation Half Day Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Moshi within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Moshi?

    +

On Outty we rank every Moshi experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Materuni Waterfall, Coffee Tour and Picnic Hot Lunch, Kilimanjaro climb, Machame Route (7-day), Kilimanjaro climb by Lemosho Route (7-day). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Moshi?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Moshi?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
