One of the most memorable trips we have ever done

We spent 6 days travelling through the Omo Valley, starting and finishing in Arba Minch, and honestly, this was one of those trips that we know we will remember for a very long time. We visited so many different places and communities during the trip — Jinka, Mursi, Ari, Banna, Tsemay, Arbore, Karo, Hamer, Dassanech and Yangatom, as well as Dorze and Lake Chamo around Arba Minch. Every day felt completely different. Of course, travelling in the Omo Valley is not always easy. There are some very long drives and some pretty rough roads, so you need to be prepared for that. But for us, that was also part of the experience. We actually enjoyed watching the scenery change along the way, stopping in villages and seeing everyday life in places that feel very far away from the usual tourist routes. What we liked most was that the trip didn't feel like just going from one tourist attraction to another. We had the chance to spend time in different communities and see how different their traditions and daily lives are. Some encounters were very moving and made us stop and think. Even the simple moments — people smiling at us, children waving, walking through villages or just sitting and watching what was happening around us — are things we still talk about. And a big part of why we enjoyed the trip was our guide, Abey from Danakil Depression Tours. Abey was really great from the beginning. He was friendly, relaxed and patient, and we never felt that we were just being rushed through the trip. Whenever we had questions, he took the time to explain things. He also knew the area very well and helped us understand what we were seeing instead of just giving us a quick explanation and moving on. After several days together, it honestly felt less like travelling with a guide and more like travelling with someone we knew. We also really appreciated how Abey handled the cultural visits. The Omo Valley is a very special place, and having someone local who knows the communities and understands how to approach people made us feel much more comfortable. There were definitely tiring days, but we never finished a day thinking it wasn't worth it. Quite the opposite — we often arrived tired and then found ourselves talking about everything we had seen that day. The last part of the trip around Arba Minch and Lake Chamo, together with the visit to the Dorze area, was a lovely way to finish the journey. Looking back, we are very happy that we chose to spend six days in the Omo Valley rather than trying to rush through it. It gave us time to actually experience the journey. A huge thank you to Abey for everything. He was an amazing guide and made a big difference to our experience. If you're considering doing the Omo Valley, we would definitely recommend taking the time to do it properly and travelling with a good local guide. For us, these six days became one of the highlights of our Ethiopia trip, and we left with a lot of great memories. Thank you, Abey — we won't forget this trip!

Great Experience

I booked late the night before with Danakil Depression Tours to do the guided omo vall y tour - they were prompt in sending me a confirmation and giving me updated information on meeting locations. My turmi guide kia was on time and walked with me from the meeting spot to the gateway, where he purchased our tickets before leading us to the village . He respected that I preferred to be quiet and take in the scenery, and answered questions when asked. Unfortunately I don’t remember the name of my karo guide, however he was incredibly knowledgeable on the history of the caves and gave me a lot of information on each carving we saw. He was also incredibly patient with my struggle of walking up the hill to the caves. Overall a great experience and definitely worth checking out the caves - just be prepared to have to do a lot of walking/climbing stairs to get to the caves (make sure you have good non-slip shoes). There’s also a lot of vendors on the island so it’s worth having cash if you want to buy anything, however some do have card available.
