Amazing experience, but not 5-star (set expectations accordingly)

Sapa and Ha Long Bay are two must see places to see while in Northern Vietnam! This tour provides that while you are staying in Hanoi. Overall, the experience was great! (seeing a variety of sights, doing a mixture of activities, small group size) The tour composed of two separate tour experiences (Sapa + Ha Long Bay). I will critique each separately. SAPA TOUR: The first day was a light walk through the local small town of Cat Cat. Nice history and local cultural aspects provided. Dinner was provided at a local restaurant (food quality good). It also happened to be Autumn Festival time, so was able to experience the local festivities (parade, performances, lights, etc.). The second day was mostly hiking. Be prepared to do A LOT of walking and hiking in the forests. I enjoyed the intense vertical hike up into the mountains via small trail. You will get dirty, but if prepared with proper hiking shoes and clothes, you will be fine. There will be other local assistants to help you so you don't slip if needed. SAPA Recommendation: Even though the overall experience was great, there were some major misses. The driver from Hanoi to Sapa drove quite fast around curves and the small bus could be bumpy in the back. Better driving would be nice. The driver back to Hanoi was great, smooth, and calm. There were no detailed itinerary provided, so most of the activities were spontaneous. That can be very unnerving and prevents proper planning of what to bring, wear, and prepare for. Need to fix this. HANOI: Besides being brought back to Hanoi to your hotel, no tour activities were provided. So I would rename this tour to just Sapa and Ha Long Bay Tour. Hanoi was just the central pickup point for both. HA LONG BAY TOUR: Well coordinated, canoeing, cave walk, boat was dated, guide explained schedule well. Driver was great, safe, careful. OVERALL RECOMMENDATION FOR VIATOR PACKAGE: Detailed tour itinerary was not provided beforehand, just high level. This made it difficult to plan, coordinate pickup/dropoff locations, what to bring, what to wear, and what to expect. Please improve this for others so it is not so spontaneous. I had to do A LOT back and forth texting via WhatsApp during the 5-day tour. Luckily I had data plan on phone, but that should not be the case for a tour package. My expectation is that everything is planned out for you and you don't have to worry about the details. Some of the taxi connections were not included.

    +

Around 0 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Hanoi can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Hanoi and add a light layer if any part of the 120-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Hanoi?

    +

On Outty we rank every Hanoi experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Ninh Binh Day Trip from Hanoi with Tam Coc or Trang An & Mua Cave, Ha Giang Loop Tour 4 Days 3 Nights with Ha Giang Vision Tour, Halong Bay Day Tour With Titop Island, Cave, Kayak & Lunch. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Hanoi?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Hanoi?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
