Amazing and transformative experience, one of a kind tour guide, can't wait to return!

I don't even know where to begin - given time to reflect, this was one of the most amazing and transformative experiences I/we have had. My partner is originally from South Africa and we both enjoyed our trip immensely due to our incredible guide, John (Kagisho John Mothhiba). The preparation/planning and communication with Leigh was super helpful and always with an immediate response. At one point, we weren't sure if we could make it due to the California (Eaton) fire impact and Leigh was really understanding. We felt safe, cared for, and excited about our trip with John at all times. He is so knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, informative and skillful and just a lot of fun. I really felt like I was experiencing a little bit of this beautiful country and he was able to spot all kinds of animals, large and small, close up and distant. I don't know how he did it! He also helped me a lot in getting wonderful photos. We wanted to tour a local township afterwards and he set that up with a lovely tour guide from the area. The combination of activities on this tour is really well thought out--a lot was packed in but also not frenetic, rather cathartic, thoroughly enjoyable and always captivating. The food and accommodations were outstanding and varied. The places we stayed overnight were gorgeous, each place unique and memorable. I couldn't believe where we stayed at in one of the National Parks. I believe it was on my birthday and I felt like a queen in that spot, right there where you could hear all the animals outside and breathe in the beauty. I'll never forget it and it was such a welcome relief after fleeing the fires in California. The real value of the trip was immeasurable but cost wise, very reasonable and such a nice blend of learning about this striking beautiful country, and understanding some of the challenges. We went through really interesting towns, unforgettable landscapes as well as seeing wildlife. I cannot say enough about this tour company, the guide, the experience. I hope to be lucky enough to return and travel with them again.

    Best Trip Ever!

Our 4-day South African safari with guide John was an unforgettable experience. Day 1 at Addo Elephant Park showcased diverse wildlife, from lions to zebras. Day 2's Zebra National Park revealed hidden beauty and a thrilling cheetah walk. The valley of desolation on Day 3, followed by a night in Karoo, added a unique touch. Exploring the owl house and fossil tour on Day 4 was a delight. Fantastic views, superb food, and top-notch accommodation enhanced the journey, but John's expertise made it truly exceptional. Highly recommend this adventure and Afro Tours as THE place to book your tour! Best Regards, Clement and Chantal

    Super Safari Tour

There were two of us traveling with the guide and we had a very entertaining and exciting time. The guide told us and explained a lot about the animals, nature and more in all the national parks. Everything was very well planned and even changes due to the weather were taken into account.

Response from the operator: Dear Andrina, Thank you for your wonderful review. We are very happy you got to experience this amazing new route with us. It really is a very special part of South Africa. We hope to welcome again soon. Best wishes, The Afroventures Team

    Brilliant Trip!

Fabulous excursion with plenty of variety. Day 1 in Addo was an incredible experience, lots of elephants to see alongside many other animals, springbok, warthogs, zebras, kudu and even a little dung beetle! Day 2 off to Mountain Zebra National Park to visit a different type of zebra and the opportunity to track cheetah. Next stop the quirky town of Neu Bethesda and finally the magnificent Valley of Desolation. A great variety covering a big area! Huge thanks to the organiser Leigh, so very helpful and available! Also a huge thanks to our guide Allen, so friendly, helpful and incredibly knowledgeable - we would not have been better looked after! Would highly recommend this trip. Excellent experience and excellent value!

4 Day Addo to Karoo Safari: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Port Elizabeth.

How much does 4 Day Addo to Karoo Safari cost?

    +

Prices start at $1121 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Port Elizabeth usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does 4 Day Addo to Karoo Safari take?

    +

Plan for about 96 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Port Elizabeth is not rushed.

Is 4 Day Addo to Karoo Safari worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 10 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable outdoors in Port Elizabeth, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule 4 Day Addo to Karoo Safari?

    +

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is 4 Day Addo to Karoo Safari suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 96-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book 4 Day Addo to Karoo Safari?

    +

Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Port Elizabeth can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Port Elizabeth and add a light layer if any part of the 96-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does 4 Day Addo to Karoo Safari start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Port Elizabeth within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Port Elizabeth?

    +

On Outty we rank every Port Elizabeth experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Whale, Dolphin & Penguin Island Cruise, Addo Elephant Full Day Safari with a Traditional South African Braai (BBQ) Lunch, Addo Elephant National Park All Inclusive Full-Day Safari. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Port Elizabeth?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Port Elizabeth?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
