These tours are intended for people who are interested in learning about the formation of the many unique landscapes found on the island. This tour is unique because Dr. Jovanelly leads the tours with her husband, Joe Cook. Dr. Jovanelly wrote Iceland: Tectonics, Volcanics, and Glacial Features for a major publisher (Wiley) in 2020. Since, it has gone on to their best-selling book in natural sciences for the past 3 years. She uses this book as your field guide. Dr. Jovanelly has been leading trips and researching Iceland since 2006 so she knows the island like the back of her hand. Additionally, this tour offers many more active experiences than our big-box competitors and all the excursion fees are included in our price. Plus, as an added bonus, Dr. Jo and Joey are a heck of a lot of fun! "Active exploration with enthusiastic geologists"! Plus, "Dr. Jo" and "Joey" are a heck of a lot of fun! Please note that a background in geology is not necessary to be a trip participant.

Fantastic trip to Iceland
We decided to go to Iceland to see the eclipse and found this fantastic group of like-minded folks, all interested in the geology of Iceland and wanting to experience the total eclipse. Despite not actually "seeing" the eclipse (cloudy skies), we got to experience the totality of the eclipse. More than that, we got to spend time with fantastic guides (Tamie and Joey) who showed us the magic and wonder of Iceland. We will definitely go back again. Tamie had so much knowledge about the geology to share with us during the entire trip. The accommodations were wonderful, but the camaraderie of the group and our guides made the trip so much better than it otherwise would have been..

Volcanoes and Glaciers: Viking Iceland
Iceland was on my bucket list for a long time. But I wanted to tour with knowledgeable people and I got everything I hoped for with Adventure Geology Tours. We traveled the whole island and learned about its geological and cultural history from experts in both. The island is unique in many ways and breathtaking in its stark beauty. Anyone who really wants to get to know Iceland would do well to take one of these well-organized, small-group trips. The owner/guides, Tamie Jovanelly and Joe Cook really know their stuff! And they take care of everything, down to the last detail.

An awesome way to see the whole island of Iceland in less than 2 weeks!
My husband and I have wanted to do a round-the-island tour of Iceland since we first visited the country in 2010 and only took day trips out of Reykjavik, partly because we knew there was a lot of awesome geology we missed out on on our first visit. My husband is a working geologist and I'm a journalist, but we both were excited about the idea of having a geology professor as a tour guide for our trip. We were not disappointed. Between the geologic insights that Tamie provided and the tour director guidance that Joe provided, we spent an amazing 13 days driving around the island, seeing all the well-known places along with many off-the-beaten-track stops. Joe and Tamie worked hard to make sure everyone in the tour felt included and that their personal needs were met. They also did a great job of diffusing the occasional tension that can crop up when you have 16 people in a van for a week. The trip was well planned and executed from start to finish. We had detailed itineraries each day so we knew what to expect, what to pack and where to be when. The small tour group size meant we weren't waiting around on people at stops. The Sprinter van was very comfortable for our group size. The hotels that were included were uniformly comfortable, convenient and some were quirky and interesting, in the best possible way. All we had to do was show up and enjoy the amazing scenery and interesting geology. The tour's current driver is Icelandic and she provided lots of interesting insight into the Icelandic culture that only a local could provide. The lunches and breakfasts were included in the tour along with some dinners. The dinners on our own allowed us to try some different restaurants from the group. We also ended up eating some on-our-own dinners with people we met on the tour. My husband and I could have planned a similar itinerary on our own, but it would have been a lot more stressful and we would have missed out on a lot of geologic and cultural insights about the country. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see the wonders of Iceland with no stress and lots of entertainment built in.

Great trip to Iceland
We’d recommend this trip wholeheartedly. Iceland – The island is jaw droppingly beautiful, varied, and interesting. The scale and beauty of the landscape is something else. We visited most of the island and saw most of the interesting and beautiful sights. A visit to Iceland is a must for anyone who loves nature. The Geology – Tamie is a great teacher, making understanding the landscape accessible to both geologists, who what more detail, and non-geologists, who want the basics, alike. She prepares us well and her explanations make the experience so much more than a “wow that’s beautiful” expedition – we understand the reasons for the landscape we see. The team – Joe and Tamie, and the Icelandic driver Groa are a great team. The trip was incredibly fun and playful, as well as educational and interesting. The pace was right and we had enough time on our own. The group size was right, the hotels were good, the food tasty, and Joe’s play lists had something for everyone. A terrific two weeks in every way.

Fantastic small-group tour of Iceland, recommend
Iceland is an amazing place to visit, with spectacular scenery. This Geology Adventure Tour hits all the highlights of this beautiful land, including lava flows, waterfalls, rock formations, glacier hiking and glacial lagoons. While the tour focuses on geology as is fitting for an island so geologically active, the activities are varied and the trip is perfectly suited to non-geologists as well. The tours of the hydroelectric plant, Lava museum, and visit to the Blue Lagoon complemented the geology theme well. We saw much more than we would have doing the island circuit on our own. Joey and Tamie are energetic and organized hosts and kept us moving at a good pace while keeping us on time to fit in lots of activities. They have been to Iceland many times so the trip is curated well and very well structured. Our driver Groa is a great resource and full of information and personal anecdotes about Iceland. The whole team is a lot of fun and very helpful. The bus is very comfortable, with chargers for your phone all the photos you will be taking. The hotels we stayed outside Reykjavik were clean and comfortable, mostly in small towns as well as a scenic rural stay at a horse farm. Hotel rooms in Iceland can be hard to come by during peak summer season so it was nice to have everything arranged. The tour included breakfast and lunch every day, as well as a few group dinners. We were lucky to have a very congenial and wonderful group that got along fantastically and wound up spending most of our free/optional dinner-times with them because they were so much fun to talk to. Things to keep in mind: Pack light! Hotel rooms in Iceland are small. Do not bring heavy suitcases, luggage racks are uncommon. Bring shampoo, soap - not provided in all hotels. Laundromats are rare and only a few hotels offer laundry service. Plan to wash in sink when staying somewhere 2 nights. Forget about ironing. Food is expensive at restaurants, more reasonable prices at gas stations most of which have dining rooms. Alcohol is expensive, pick up at duty free. Reykjavik is a small vibrant city, easily walkable. Worth having 1-2 free days to see the town.
