What you'll see and do
Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
Situated in the dramatic alpine landscape of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route traverses Japan’s highest mountain range and in doing so carries visitors to the so-called ‘Roof of Japan’. Using mountain transports to and from the Nagano-side of the mountain range, you will ascend to around 2450 metres above sea level and Murodo Station using a series of tunnel buses, cable cars and ropeways. The journey will take you from the base station to Kurobe Dam – an epic feat of engineering – before heading further above to the stop station of Murodo. Once at Murodo, your guide will accompany you on a guided walk of a leisurely trail in the shadow of the mountain summit above at 3000 metres. This is a stunning landscape of alpine flowers in summer – July to August – followed by some of Japan’s most stunning autumn colours – September to October.

Nice day visiting Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
I had a great time visiting Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, guided by Kevin. We had an efficient day, being able to ride all of the transport modes using the group queue and flexibility for what we wanted to do in the free time at Murodo. Kevin has a lot of knowledge about the history and details about the areas we visited. We also had a comfortable and safe journey to Ogizawa and back from our driver. Thank you for a wonderful day!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for taking the time to share this! We're delighted to hear you had such a great day exploring the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Navigating all those different modes of transport can sometimes feel daunting, so it’s wonderful to know that Kevin’s coordination made the journey smooth and efficient, leaving you with plenty of quality free time at Murodo. We’ll be sure to pass along your kind words to Kevin about his historical insights, as well as to our driver for keeping the journey to and from Ogizawa safe and comfortable. Thank you again for joining us on the "Roof of Japan," and we hope to see you on another adventure soon in Japan!

Great snow experience on Mt Tateyama
What a fantastic experience! Got to trek through the snow on Mt Tateyama, which was a surprise. I would recommend wearing snow shoes or hiking boots as it’s very slippery in the snow. Cable car up & down mountain was great with spectacular views.

Kurobe dam and Tateyama mountain
Very nice trip. Weather was superb: warm and sunny. In the foothills it was fall-weather, at the top -everything covered with a snow. There wasn’t much hiking during the tour. Mostly at the top, there wasn’t much hiking two hours to walk around. Very relaxing trip with beautiful views. The most beautiful I believe is the Kurobe dam. The guide was very nice, it was a pleasure to talk to! I learned a lot about Japan in general. Thank you!!

Beautiful scenery and a very enjoyable trip!
We went as a family of 4 and had a fantastic time! When I first booked this tour, I did wonder if this was too expensive but after going, it really is very worth the price. Endo was a fantastic guide and he made sure that all of us were well taken care of and ensured that he helped to keep time so that we had sufficient time to see what we wanted to see. He also shared his wealth of knowledge. It was a joy and I would love to go again! The weather was great too and scenery was breathtaking.

Why this scores 76
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
1-Day Tateyama-Kurobe Tour: Walking on the 'Roof of Japan': questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Nagano.
How much does 1-Day Tateyama-Kurobe Tour: Walking on the 'Roof of Japan' cost?
+
Prices start at $219 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Nagano usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does 1-Day Tateyama-Kurobe Tour: Walking on the 'Roof of Japan' take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Nagano is not rushed.
Is 1-Day Tateyama-Kurobe Tour: Walking on the 'Roof of Japan' worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 76 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 22 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Nagano, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule 1-Day Tateyama-Kurobe Tour: Walking on the 'Roof of Japan'?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is 1-Day Tateyama-Kurobe Tour: Walking on the 'Roof of Japan' suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book 1-Day Tateyama-Kurobe Tour: Walking on the 'Roof of Japan'?
+
Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Nagano can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Nagano and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does 1-Day Tateyama-Kurobe Tour: Walking on the 'Roof of Japan' start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Nagano within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Nagano?
+
On Outty we rank every Nagano experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include 1-Day Tour from Nagano and Matsumoto Kamikochi & Matsumoto Castle, 1-Day Snow Monkeys, Zenko-ji Temple & Sake in Nagano, Izakaya Food Tour in Nagano. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Nagano?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Nagano?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
