The San Juan de Dios Hospital - CDT was created shortly after the founding of Santiago, being the first hospital in the city and in Chilean territory. There is no clarity regarding the exact date of its founding, but it is considered that it began its functions on October 3, 1552, at the end of Pedro de Valdivia's government, under the name Hospital de Nuestra Señora del Socorro. Originally located in Alameda, east of St. Francis Church. In 1617 its administration was in charge of the Hospital Order of San Juan de Dios. Throughout the entire Chilean colonial era and up to the present day, this hospital has had an important role in Santiago society. After its demolition in 1944, the San Juan de Dios Hospital - CDT was relocated, rebuilt, and reopened on May 1, 1954, reopening its doors to the community. This passage, along with the others built in the sector, responds to the need to create rooms for the population, mostly from middle-class groups, who were beginning to settle in the Brasil area. This city was built by the architects Cruz Montt and Larraín Bravo in 1920. Presenting a neo-romantic style, being one of the most notable in its kind. The appropriation of public space is a characteristic of this passage, as it has a beautiful garden in which a series of palm trees are located, giving a sense of privacy to the facing houses. In the style of construction, the special treatment of plinths, porches, windows, arches, and balconies stands out. Its accesses are different, since on Huérfanos street it is possible to find a small plaza and on Compañía street the verticality of the buildings stands out much more.

In 1868, Victorino Tauzan opened the Peluquería Francesa next to two barbers of French origin in front of Yungay square, on Santo Domingo street, with a predominantly male clientele. In that era, the sector was part of one of the most affluent neighborhoods in mid-19th century Santiago society. The establishment became known not only for serving the French community residing in the city and the diplomatic corps of the French embassy in Santiago, but it also gained notoriety throughout the sector. During that period, Chilean society was undergoing a process of cultural modernization and the formation of its own national identity, incorporating European influences, especially French, to distance itself from its Hispanic colonial past after independence, which favored the popularity of French-style establishments, such as this barbershop.
