A week in Athens after our cruise.

We finished a cruise with celebrity in Pireaus, and had booked an AIRBNB, with "My athens story", a 10 minute walk to the Acropolis Museum and Entrance. It was a 2 bedroom apartment that met all our needs and was clean, good beds, and all the required items. . The owner visited us on our last day and was very friendly. We arrived at 8:30 AM and our unit arrival was not scheduled until 2 PM. As we were takin a taxi from the Cruise terminal, our driver asked us what we wanted and suggested a 4 hour tour in his taxi, before we went to our room. (It seems the drivers always hit you up to take a tour.) We took a chance and paid $300 Euros for a tour for the three of us. He turned out to be very reputable and toured for 5 hours and he assisted us in finding our Unit. His tour went all along the coast and through some residential area showing us where he lived and where his family went on weekends, etc., showing then through downtown, explanations all along the way. Then to the Monastery, etc. It provided a great orientation to Athens and his tips were useful all week. With that background we purchased a 2 day "Hop-on hop off " Pass and used it for getting around and seeing things for a second time,. instead of walking or using taxis. on the third day we started suing the metro, buying a 2 day pass, and found it busy, but the same as in other cities. Friendly ticket agent and clean subways. The Acropolis museum is a $150 Million marvel and provides a top experience. I would go there before going up to the Acropolis. Buy your tickets on line, before going. so you have a time to enter, otherwise you may wait for a few hours. Eating at the streetside places , provides a nice experience,, and the food was usually average, but of reasonable quality. Going to Monastriaki Square in the evenings as well as daytime is an interesting experience. Staying at the Atto;los Hotel is a good experience. as it is a short walk to the Square and metro stop, plus they have a great rooftop Garden Bar, and friendly helpful front desk staff. The starting taxi tour allowed us to see many of the outlying sights and we could concentrate on the central areas.
