About this experience
Get pumped for a challenging descent into a lush rainforest canyon that will stimulate your adrenal glands to the max. We are the only rafting company that offers the opportunity to run this exhilarating and scenic stretch. Afterwards, we will proceed to the river, a stretch that is considered one of the most technically challenging commercially run rapids in Costa Rica. You will be accompanied by expert river guides and safety kayakers. There will be two breaks from the heart pounding rapids to refuel. The first stop will be along the river, where we will enjoy some fresh fruit. The second stop will be for an authentic Costa Rican lunch, you’ll also learn about the growing, harvesting, production of chocolate, medical plants, fruits and sugar cane.

Class V River was shutdown continued with class 3-4 instead
We booked the class V on the saraquippi and due to a massive rain storm that hit the night before that river was unavailable to raft on. They gave us the option to cancel for a full refund or continue with the day and go to the Balsa class 3-4 instead. We chose to continue and do the Balsa and our guide Rinal took us and another couple and who also booked the class V and made sure we had an amazing time. The river was very fun and exciting and Rinal made sure we didn’t feel like we missed out on the river we originally booked. As an adrenaline junkie I was nervous the experience wouldnt live up to the expectations I had made in my head with it not being the more intense river but there was no need to worry. It was an amazing time. We saw sloths and macaws, and even got to get out of the raft on a couple flatter parts of the river and just float/ swim down the jungle river. Must do experience in Costa Rica. There is the price difference $130 for what we booked vs the 80-90 for the river we ended up going on with no partial refund or anything but again I do believe Rinal gave us a better experience because of that, and I feel it was totally worth it. If that is something that may bug you if the river canceled you can probably cancel for a full refund and rebook the same morning on the different class River. Thank you Costa Rica Decents for a great time! P.S- we drove to the office to be picked up and while we waited got to walk around the farm and pet the baby goats and other farm animals, the fruit on the river, and the lunch after all added to this great trip.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review! We’re sorry that the Sarapiquí Class V had to be closed due to the heavy rainfall the night before, but we’re very happy that you decided to continue the adventure on the Balsa River. We truly appreciate your understanding and flexibility. It’s wonderful to hear that Ronal helped make the experience exciting and memorable, and that you didn’t feel like you were missing out on the adventure you originally planned. We’ll definitely share your kind words with him! We’re also glad you enjoyed the wildlife sightings, swimming and floating sections of the river, fresh fruit, traditional lunch, and the farm experience while waiting at our office. We love being able to offer our guests a complete Costa Rican experience beyond just the rafting itself. We appreciate you choosing to continue with us and are especially happy to know that you felt the experience was completely worthwhile. Thank you again for recommending Costa Rica Descents and for trusting us with such an important part of your Costa Rican adventure. We hope to welcome you back someday for another trip down the river—perhaps the Sarapiquí Class V next time!

Great experience
It was one of the funnest experience that we got to experience here in Costa Rica for our honeymoon. Had a blast. Our after experience with the lunching and having the little farm visit was amazing with Esteban.
Response from the operator: Congratulations on your honeymoon! We are absolutely thrilled that tackling our Class V rapids was one of the funnest experiences of your trip. Esteban is going to be so happy to hear that he made your post-river lunch and farm visit so amazing. Thank you for celebrating such a special occasion with us, and we wish you both a lifetime of adventures together! Costa Rica Descents

Better than imagined
Everything was beyond expectations! Kevin was our guide on the bus and had lots of local knowledge and we even stopped to look at different animals along the way. Jeffrey was our raft captain and he made the whole experience amazing, despite me falling overboard lol. By far our best Costa Rican experience! Absolutely recommend them!
Response from the operator: We’re truly grateful you took the time to share your experience with us. It’s incredible to hear the adventure surpassed your expectations and that the journey to the river, along with the wildlife sightings, added even more to the day. We’re especially glad you felt supported throughout the excitement — even with an unexpected splash along the way. Thank you for your enthusiastic recommendation and for choosing to experience the river with us.

White Water Rafting class V: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for La Fortuna.
How much does White Water Rafting class V cost?
+
Prices start at $150 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in La Fortuna usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does White Water Rafting class V take?
+
Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in La Fortuna is not rushed.
Is White Water Rafting class V worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 76 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 79 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in La Fortuna, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule White Water Rafting class V?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is White Water Rafting class V suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 12. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 6-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book White Water Rafting class V?
+
Around 28 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in La Fortuna can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in La Fortuna and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does White Water Rafting class V start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central La Fortuna within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in La Fortuna?
+
On Outty we rank every La Fortuna experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Upper Balsa River White Water Rafting Class 3/4 in Costa Rica, North Fields Cafe: Craft Specialty Coffee and Chocolate Tour, Canyoning Adventure Rappelling Waterfalls in Arenal Volcano. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit La Fortuna?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in La Fortuna?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
