    Who would ever have guessed?

We had absolutely no idea what this tour would be like so had no expectations. On entering the building we were struck by the merchandise on sale...it was mind boggling!!! Our guide was easy to hear most of the time ( It's quite a noisy place.) and considered each question asked carefully before replying. She was like a friend sharing her treasures and we felt extremely relaxed. Thank you, Bianca. You made it very special and fascinating. I now see aluminum foil and scrap plastics in a whole new light thanks to Santa and the mad professor....delightful characters who play there and get paid for it. ( I NEED a job like that.)

Response from the operator: Kia ora, Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We love hearing from guests who come in not quite knowing what to expect and leave having had such a memorable experience. It’s fantastic to hear Bianca made the tour feel so welcoming and engaging, and we’ll be sure to pass your lovely feedback on to her. We’re also so glad you enjoyed meeting our creatives and discovering the surprising ways everyday materials can be transformed through movie magic. Hearing that you now see aluminium foil and scrap plastics differently is exactly the kind of inspiration we love to spark. Ngā mihi nui, Wētā Workshop Reservations Team

Must do experience for Middle Earth fans

Awesome experience. Great, friendly, knowledgeable tour guide. Was surprised to learn just how many projects Weta Workshop had been involved in. The cave was great too, again with knowlegeable, charismatic staff. The shop also had a good variety of items available in a wide range of price points. Would definitely highly recommend this tour to anyone. Might look to do one of the hands on workshops in Auckland next.

Response from the operator: Kia ora, Thank you so much for your fantastic review. We’re thrilled to hear you had such an awesome experience and that our team made a great impression with their friendliness and knowledge. It’s always a fun surprise discovering just how many projects Wētā Workshop has been involved in, so we’re glad that stood out to you. Wonderful to hear you enjoyed the Cave and the shop as well, and that the range of items worked for you. We’d love to welcome you to one of our hands-on workshops in Auckland in the future. More than just Lord of the Rings

Pick up by driver Derek. He was enthusiastic and informative on the way to the Cave. Extra kudos for stopping at the art deco cinema and letting us spend a short time looking around. Ben was a great and equally enthusiastic tour guide at the Cave. A great opportunity to see some of the effects and props and general behind the scenes. The history of Weta was also very good and I was pleased it wasn't Lord of the Rings centric. They have done so much more and it was good to see that represented. Don't worry, still plenty of Lord of the Rings!

Response from the operator: Kia ora, Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We’re thrilled to hear you had such a great experience from start to finish. It’s fantastic to know Derek made the journey enjoyable and informative, and that you appreciated the extra stop along the way. We’re also so glad Ben made the tour at the Cave just as engaging, we’ll be sure to pass your kind words on to both of them. It’s great to hear you enjoyed learning about the wider history of Wētā and seeing the range of work beyond Lord of the Rings, while still getting a taste of it too. Wētā Workshop Guided Transfers & Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Wellington.

How much does Wētā Workshop Guided Transfers & Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $63 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Wellington usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Wētā Workshop Guided Transfers & Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 3.3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Wellington is not rushed.

Is Wētā Workshop Guided Transfers & Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 82 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 170 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Wellington, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Wētā Workshop Guided Transfers & Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Wētā Workshop Guided Transfers & Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3.3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Wētā Workshop Guided Transfers & Tour?

    +

Around 59 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Wellington can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Wellington and add a light layer if any part of the 3.3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Wētā Workshop Guided Transfers & Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Wellington within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Wellington?

    +

On Outty we rank every Wellington experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Overnight Experience Tour on Kapiti Island, Discover Wellington 3 hour City Tour, Martinborough Wine and Wild Coast Tour from Wellington. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Wellington?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Wellington?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
