1. Albert Einstein Memorial

2. Vietnam Veterans Memorial

   One of the most moving stops on any Washington DC monuments walking tour, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial draws you slowly downward along a polished black granite wall inscribed with more than 58,000 names. Your guide will explain how 21-year-old Yale student Maya Lin won the national design competition, why her minimalist "cut in the earth" was so controversial in 1982, and how to use the directories to locate a specific name. 3. Lincoln Memorial

Climb the marble steps to stand before Daniel Chester French's 19-foot seated Abraham Lincoln and read the Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural carved into the chamber walls. 4. Korean War Veterans Memorial

   Just across the Reflecting Pool, the Korean War Veterans Memorial honors the 5.7 million Americans who served in the "Forgotten War." Your guide leads you past 19 larger-than-life stainless steel soldiers advancing through a field of juniper, their ponchos and weary faces reflected in a polished granite mural wall etched with more than 2,400 archival images. You'll see the inscription "Freedom Is Not Free" and the Wall of Remembrance listing every American and KATUSA name lost. 5. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

   Set on the Tidal Basin in direct line between the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is one of the most inspiring stops of the walk. Pass through the split Mountain of Despair to reach the Stone of Hope, where a 30-foot granite likeness of Dr. King gazes out across the water. Your guide unpacks the symbolism drawn from his 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech and highlights favorite quotes from the 450-foot inscription wall on justice, peace and civil rights. Framed by cherry trees and open water, this Tidal Basin landmark is a standout photo stop on your Washington DC walking tour.

6. World War II Memorial

   Anchoring the eastern end of the Reflecting Pool, the World War II Memorial honors the 16 million Americans who served and the more than 400,000 who died. Your guide walks you through the oval plaza of 56 granite pillars representing every US state and territory, the Atlantic and Pacific arches, and the Freedom Wall with its 4,048 gold stars, one for every 100 lives lost. Look for the hidden "Kilroy was here" carvings and hear stories from the home front and the battlefields. 7. The White House

   No Washington DC sightseeing tour is complete without the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. From the Ellipse and South Lawn viewpoint you'll get a classic photo of the South Portico, home and office to every US president since John Adams. Your guide shares the stories behind its 132 rooms, the 1814 burning and rebuilding, the Truman renovation, and the traditions of the Rose Garden, Oval Office and the National Christmas Tree. 8. Washington Monument

   Your National Mall walking tour finishes at the Washington Monument, the 555-foot marble obelisk that is the tallest structure in Washington DC and the symbol at the heart of the capital skyline. Standing at its base, your guide explains the 40-year construction saga, why the stone visibly changes color about a third of the way up, and how the monument survived the 2011 earthquake. Guests who choose the ticket-included option have timed-entry tickets reserved in advance for the 500-foot observation deck.
