About this experience
The visit to the Frantoio Rosso Ipogeo gives the feeling of traveling through time: first when Puglia was submerged by the sea until the last century, when olive oil was produced. The route starts from the observation of marine fossils embedded in the limestone rock, and goes through the late medieval centuries when lampante oil was produced and exported to Europe. It will include the production phases and equipment used at the time, and then conclude with the last period of the mill, when the production from lamps and lampante oil was transformed into edible oil.

Much more than a simple visit: a five-sense experience
We went to the Frantoio Rosso Ipogeo in Martina Franca as a family, thinking we would just take a simple tour of the oil mill with an oil tasting. In reality, we found ourselves living a five-sense experience, in the true sense of the word. Giuseppe, the owner, is a truly special person, a real artist, capable of conveying all his passion. He told us the history of the oil mill and how, with great care and dedication, he brought this wonderful place back to life, restoring it and taking us back in time. The tasting was very pleasant: in addition to the oils, we tasted various typical local products, discovering authentic flavors and aromas of Puglia. But the real surprise, and the icing on the cake, came at the end: Giuseppe sat down at his grand piano and gave us some splendid performances. A completely unexpected, exciting moment that is truly difficult to describe in words. We went in thinking we were visiting an oil mill and we came out with an experience, an emotion, and a beautiful memory. Compliments to Giuseppe for having transformed a place rich in history into something so unique and special. Absolutely recommended!

Disappointed
Very, very small. Guided tour with headphones in 10 minutes. There were some nice pictures and a person. A good picture of how things used to go.

Fascinating
So much more than we expected! We appreciated the owner's hard work and research to restore this underground oil mill into a museum. We especially enjoyed his passion for sharing the history with others. The olive oil tasting experience was educational and so delicious!

Great passion
Great little tour and olive oil tasting at the end. The owner has great passion for olive oil and the making of it. If we were staying longer we would have gone to one of the evenings music events. Nice small tour size.

An important legacy
A beautiful way to bring back to life an old underground crusher. Let yourself be transported by the words of Giuseppe and Samantha in a hidden world that smells of truth and sacrifice and the final tasting teaches us to understand and recognize the different characteristics of 'oil. An immersive experience not to be missed. Thank you. It was a pleasure.

Why this scores 66
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Visit to the Red Hypogeum Oil Mill of Martina Franca: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Brindisi.
How much does Visit to the Red Hypogeum Oil Mill of Martina Franca cost?
+
Prices start at $7 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Brindisi usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Visit to the Red Hypogeum Oil Mill of Martina Franca take?
+
Plan for about 1 hour from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Brindisi is not rushed.
Is Visit to the Red Hypogeum Oil Mill of Martina Franca worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 66 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.4/5 across 10 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Brindisi, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Visit to the Red Hypogeum Oil Mill of Martina Franca?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Visit to the Red Hypogeum Oil Mill of Martina Franca suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 7. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 1-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Visit to the Red Hypogeum Oil Mill of Martina Franca?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Brindisi can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Brindisi and add a light layer if any part of the 1-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Visit to the Red Hypogeum Oil Mill of Martina Franca start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Brindisi within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Brindisi?
+
On Outty we rank every Brindisi experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Wine Experience: vineyard, wines and food, Mozzarella Experience - Cheese Tasting Tour at Masseria Fragnite, Puglia Bike Tour: Cycling Through the History of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Brindisi?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Brindisi?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
