Unique section of the Wall, but watch the optional raft waterslide

Well worth taking a private tour of this quiet section of the wall. There were hardly any people there so it was peaceful and scenic. On arrival, you transfer by boat and have stunning views of the wall from the lake. We chose to climb up (some steep steps but worth the effort) and take the magnetic slide (mini cars on rails) down to the next section. There is a steam train option that’s really fun especially for kids. Highly recommend. Our one and only downside to the day was choosing to do what was called a “raft”, which was in fact an enormously tall waterslide that weaves down like a rollercoaster. Had a frightening time when our raft got stuck at the top and wouldn’t slide. A supervisor walked down the slide in his gumboots (!) to give us a push and we were off. Wouldn’t repeat that experience though, it was terrifying. Apart from that, it was a perfect day at this section of the wall. It is the only section in China where you can see the wall dip under the lake and reappear on the other side. A truly special experience. Do it!

    A Journey of a Lifetime

Our visit to the Great Wall of Huanghuacheng in China was truly a bucket-list experience that exceeded all expectations. We booked a private van and were met by an English-speaking guide at the train station upon our early morning arrival from Shanghai. The drive to the location was delightful, offering scenic views that set the stage for an incredible day. This section of the Great Wall is particularly special for several reasons. It is well-preserved and located near a charming farming village, allowing us to interact with the local people. We had the chance to purchase fresh produce, including berries, eggs, and vegetables, and taste local foods. The Wall is situated along a water dam, providing breathtaking views of the wall against the backdrop of lush green mountains and serene water. We enjoyed various water activities, including paddling boats and canoeing. A highlight was taking a speed boat across the dam to reach a chestnut forest, where we relaxed in a Resthouse and savored grilled chestnuts. Our guide then took us to a nearby restaurant in the woods, where we picked fresh fish from the ponds and had them grilled on-site. The meal was absolutely delicious and perfectly complemented the day’s adventures. This visit to the Great Wall of Huanghuacheng was an unforgettable experience, combining stunning scenery, cultural encounters, and delicious food. It was an adventure of a lifetime that I’ll cherish forever.

    Highly recommend

This was the highlight of my China tour. I am glad I chose this location because it is near the lake and is very beautiful. I visited in early June and the temperature here was cooler than Badaling and Mutianyu Great Wall. There were some Yellow flowers in bloom along the hillside, they made for scenic photos. The submerged wall is also a quite a unique feature for the wall. In addition, my tour guide Jerry was great company throughout the day. He has a nice sense of humor, so the 2.5 hour drive were not boring. He patiently answered all my, rather random, queries on Chinese history and traditions. At the wall, he was accommodating of time and customised our trek as per my requests. Further, at the end of the hot day we stopped by for a delicious meal at a roadside restuarant. All-in-all it was a day well spent. I came back with a lifetime of precious memories of the Great Wall.

Private 2-day Great Wall hiking adventure!

DO THIS TOUR. This was an excellent and rare opportunity to see the beauty of the wall in isolation. I cannot emphasize this enough. We spent two days hiking on the wall and there was almost no one around. The only time we ran into other tourists was near the end of our hike on the first day when we got close to the section where we hike down. It was beautiful and we got to enjoy it without the stress of trying to walk around other people. This was such an epic experience. Our guide was Rocky and our driver was Wu. Both were fantastic! We had such a good time with both of them and they were so helpful to us throughout the experience and with other tips around Beijing. I highly recommend them both as guides. You stay overnight in a local, authentic guest house. This was such an interesting experience and you got to eat all local foods as well as part of the tour. You will not regret it! Thanks Rocky, Wu and Ricky for the experience!

    Amazing day!

We did a full day excursion with tour guide David and our entire experience was amazing! From the planning process with Ricky, the driver pick up at the hotel, to the delicious local lunch, the entire hike, and David’s photography skills, the day couldn’t have been better! Ricky and David both are so accommodating and made this easily the best day of our entire trip. We really couldn’t recommend them more! A must do If you’re coming to Beijing!

VIP Great Wall Discovery: Mutianyu & Huanghuacheng Private Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Beijing.

How much does VIP Great Wall Discovery: Mutianyu & Huanghuacheng Private Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $65 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Beijing usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does VIP Great Wall Discovery: Mutianyu & Huanghuacheng Private Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Beijing is not rushed.

Is VIP Great Wall Discovery: Mutianyu & Huanghuacheng Private Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 66 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 8 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Beijing, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule VIP Great Wall Discovery: Mutianyu & Huanghuacheng Private Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is VIP Great Wall Discovery: Mutianyu & Huanghuacheng Private Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book VIP Great Wall Discovery: Mutianyu & Huanghuacheng Private Tour?

    +

Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Beijing can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Beijing and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does VIP Great Wall Discovery: Mutianyu & Huanghuacheng Private Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Beijing within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Beijing?

    +

On Outty we rank every Beijing experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mubus: Mutianyu Great Wall Bus Tour with Summer Palace Options, Beijing: Top 6 Highlights All Inclusive 2-Day Private Tour, Private Mutianyu Great Wall Trip With English-Speaking Driver. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Beijing?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Beijing?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
