Time to observe natural beauty of Udawalawe
I took a morning tour with guide Lahiru and his excellent driver, who was also a great wildlife spotter! The tour was at a leisurely pace with time to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the national park in the cool of the morning. Lahiru gave information about all the many birds and animals as we went - saw mongoose, jackal, spotted deer, water buffalo, wild hare, monkeys galore, painted stork, crested eagle up very close, Indian roller, bee eaters and loads of peacocks. Then there were plenty of close encounters with elephants, male, female and babies. Was a rare opportunity to observe these majestic animals in their own environment. This tour was more about gentle observation than a race for the elephants - recommend!

A magical safari.
Our morning safari was absolutely incredible and it far exceeded our expectations. Our guide Lahiru was outstanding and he couldn’t have made the experience better for us. All communication prior to the day was thorough, his knowledge about the park and the animals knew no bounds and his sense of humour and kindness made the morning really fun and interesting. What made our trip so good was he did not follow the crowds or other jeeps, we also saw lots of animals including a two month old elephant which was right next to us. It was my daughter’s 10th Birthday and it’s one she’ll never forget. A five star experience!

Nice safari
We had a wonderful experience at the park. We booked an early morning private safari with lahiru Prasad (+94 76 272 6799), which also helped us to organise the transport and find the accomodation. Highly recommended. In the safari we saw two elephants families and several lone male, together with crocodiles, eagles, deers, mangusts, camaleons. We were probably lucky. It was very early morning but totally worth it. Probably also evening would be a good time.

A must visit excellent wildlife Safari
A vast and beautiful wildlife sanctuary with excellent flora and fauna. The entry through private operators owned safari vehicles is unregulated with private operators charging tourists as they like without any regulations on fees, which needs to be checked. The entry fee for foreign nationals is again very confusing with no clear signboard with details. The charges are vague with entry fee, vat, huge service charge and other charges which includes a local tourist fee of safari jeep driver being billed on tourists. This needs to be streamlined to attract more tourists. Rest rooms are in the main ticket reception area. Advised to use them before start of safari which takes around 3 + hours. Also advised to wear hats and carry sufficient water and basic snacks. Safari route is extremely scenic and traversed through open fields and lush dense forests , a beautiful lotus filled pond to a still water body. There are many elephants in the jungle who riam around in hordes. Wildlife sighting was great with family if elephants including baby elephants having bath and enjoying the water, running around, deers, eagles, mongoose, fox, wolves, crocodiles, wild buffaloes, etc; Many different colourful birds are also seen. All along elephant dungs are visible. The entire safari is scenic and beautiful with good sightings of wild animals ,reptiles and birds. Definitely a must visit destination for wildlife and nature lovers.

Amazing safari with Lahiru Prasad
We had afternoon safari, we were picked up by Lahiru and his driver just before 2.00. We saw Elephants (plenty, even with long tusks), dears, buffalo, chameleon, peacocks, a mangouste, birds (including rare ones). ! Lahiru is the spotter, not the driver. That makes an immense difference versus other companies. He has extremely good eyes (took us 2 min to spot a chameleon he saw while driving fast) and knows the national Park inside out. He does not stay with other jeeps or follows them, and brought us in places nobody else would go. Felt we had park for ourselves sometimes. Jeep was nice, all seatbelts were working, good condition. The driver was fantastic, very very careful, driving slow when needed, which was great for my little ones. Yes he was a bit more expensive than other quotes I got but if you want the best, you know where to go. Def worth the extra money, should not be compared to safari with just a driver that would miss all hidden animals. His WhatsApp: +94 76 272 6799

The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Udawalawe Elephant Safari – Private & Shared Jeep: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Hambantota.
How much does Udawalawe Elephant Safari – Private & Shared Jeep cost?
+
Prices start at $10 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Hambantota usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Udawalawe Elephant Safari – Private & Shared Jeep take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Hambantota is not rushed.
Is Udawalawe Elephant Safari – Private & Shared Jeep worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 91 out of 100, which we label "90+ Club". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 116 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Hambantota, and how flexible the cancellation terms are. Scoring 90 or above puts it in the Outty 90+ Club, the top tier of everything we rank.
Can I cancel or reschedule Udawalawe Elephant Safari – Private & Shared Jeep?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Udawalawe Elephant Safari – Private & Shared Jeep suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Udawalawe Elephant Safari – Private & Shared Jeep?
+
Around 41 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Hambantota can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Hambantota and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Udawalawe Elephant Safari – Private & Shared Jeep start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Hambantota within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Hambantota?
+
On Outty we rank every Hambantota experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Udawalawe National Park — 4-Hour Private Jeep Safari (Pickup), Paradise Blow Hole, Big Buddha, Rock Temple Tours, Yala National Park Safari From Hambantota Port. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Hambantota?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Hambantota?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
