Pompeii tour from cruise ship not worth it- book elsewhere
Today our cruise ship stopped in Naples. Our travel agent booked us a four hour tour of Pompeii with WorldTours. We have done a lot of tours on this cruise (family of four with two teenagers) and the week prior in Rome, and this was the most unprofessional and a let down. The meeting point instructions were very vague on the location. Other providers at other ports give much more instruction and even photos of where to meet. Our “tour guide” (she wasn’t really a tour guide, more of an admin type- didn’t appear licensed, barely interacted with us- she was just a World Tours rep) wasn’t very friendly and didn’t interact or engage with anyone. We were supposed to meet at 7:50 and leave at 8. We were taken to a bus where we waited for people from another cruise ship, and didn’t leave the port area until 8:25. The bus was old and the AC was poor- we were sweating. We drove to another location and sat waiting- without any explanation as to what was going on! We didn’t start the drive to Pompeii until about 8:45am. On the way to Pompeii the “tour guide” spoke for about 2 minutes about Vesuvius. No information on Naples, etc. No explanation of what we were going to be doing. Pretty much silence. When we arrived at Pompeii, everyone unloaded the bus and I had to ask for us to receive the bottles of water that were to be provided with the tour (it was a very hot and sunny day). We met with an official tour guide, thankfully, for Pompeii. She was very good and knowledgeable- and she is the sole reason this isn’t a one start review. Our actual tour of Pompeii was only two hours. When we boarded the bus back no additional water was offered and there was no discussion or anything from the WorldTours rep. It was very awkward. The WorldTours rep clearly wanted a tip of some sort but as she had done pretty much nothing it was so awkward (we did tip the Pompeii tour guide). We were so let down because we had had so many fabulous experience with tour guides in Rome, Greece, and Turkey.
Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback following your tour. We genuinely regret to hear that your experience did not live up to the high standards you encountered earlier in your cruise, and we apologize for the frustrations your family experienced. We would like to clarify that for this specific excursion, our service includes a Tour Leader (the representative on the bus) whose role is administrative—handling check-ins, multi-ship group coordination, and logistics. Historical and site-specific commentary is exclusively reserved for our licensed archaeological guides at Pompeii, whom we are glad your family found highly knowledgeable and professional. However, we completely understand your disappointment regarding the communication delays, the lack of general overview during the drive, and the poor performance of the bus AC on such a hot day. Port logistics involving multiple arriving cruise ships can sometimes cause delays, but it is our responsibility to keep our guests informed, and we clearly fell short on that communication. We also regret that water was not proactively distributed upon arrival. Your feedback has been shared directly with our management and transport partners to audit our fleet's AC systems and improve our meeting point descriptions. We are grateful you highlighted our Pompeii guide's excellence, and we hope the ancient history of the site remains a fond memory for your family.

Extremely enjoyable and informative ride.
Our hotel booked a transfer from Naples to Pompeii and back. I didn't realize we would be getting an experienced tour guide in the deal. Raffaele was extremely engaging and entertaining. Had a great energy and a fun, positive vibe. We learned a lot of interesting facts on the trip. I would highly recommend him. Went beyond all of our expectations.
Response from the operator: What a wonderful surprise to read! We are so glad that what started as a simple transfer turned into an unforgettable highlight of your trip. Raffaele takes great pride in sharing the history and energy of our region, and it is fantastic to hear that his positive 'vibe' and insights exceeded your expectations. We truly believe that the journey should be just as much fun as the destination! Thank you for the high recommendation, and we hope to see you again on your next visit to Naples.

Why this scores 60
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Transfer from Naples to Pompei: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Naples.
How much does Transfer from Naples to Pompei cost?
+
Prices start at $96 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Naples usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Transfer from Naples to Pompei take?
+
Plan for about 0.7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Naples is not rushed.
Is Transfer from Naples to Pompei worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 60 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 20 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Naples, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Transfer from Naples to Pompei?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Transfer from Naples to Pompei suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 0.7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Transfer from Naples to Pompei?
+
Around 7 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Naples can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Naples and add a light layer if any part of the 0.7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Transfer from Naples to Pompei start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Naples within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Naples?
+
On Outty we rank every Naples experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Full Day Private Amalfi Coast Tour from Sorrento/Naples/Salerno, Caserta Royal Palace & Gardens Small Group Tour with Shuttle, Naples Pizza and Tiramisu Cooking Class. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Naples?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Naples?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
