    Francesco was a wonderful...

Francesco was a wonderful guide. He knows so much about Matera, and you can tell how much passion he has for the local region. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting the Bari/Puglia area.

    Matera

Francesco was the best tour guide. His knowledge of Matera and passion for what he does comes through in his storytelling of the history of the area.

    Great city, terrible tour operator

The city Matera is definitely worth the visit but DO NOT book with this tour operator. The driver/guide turned up 1hr20min late in a small beaten-down car with no aircon and non-working windows. Their reason was the company car broke down so the driver had to use his mother’s personal car!? Would be useful to have backup cars or at least let us know what delay and car we will be getting into and let us decide if we want to continue with the tour with a discount or refund us in full if we want to cancel our bookong. Due to the torturous car ride, we had to skip Altamura. Communication with tour operator was lacking on the delay and car condition, and they did not address our concerns. Viator was unhelpful either. DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS TOUR OPERATOR.

Response from the operator: Dear Ellie Pang, I am sorry for the incovenience! we did our best to guarantee your tour. I am sorry that your disappointment with the replacement car occurred at the end of the tour and not at the beginning. in any case we will try to improve our pefomance.

    Marzia is the BEST!!!

My family came from Altamura over 100 years ago which is why we needed a guide to visit family members here in Italy. Marzia was the perfect guide. She not only found the family home but consented to remain with us to translate. We had a wonderful visit between several people who had never met and could not communicate. Marzia was absolutely invaluable. We all enjoyed her personality, and she is now an honorary member of our family. I can’t praise her enough!!! Kathleen Bockoski

Response from the operator: Thank you so much!!! I am very very happy ! I hope to se you again and in that case I will send you agai Marzia!

    Not what I was expecting

There were good and not so good elements for this tour. Good: pleasant staff, good communication for booking, van was very comfortable and the other 2 participants were lovely. Not so good: I was expecting a guided tour which was not delivered. The guide seem to have very little knowledge of Altamura or Matera. Seemed to spend alot of the time on the phone. Had to consult Google maps to navigate around Matera and this portion of the trip was disappointingly brief. No real explanation of the history of Matera and to be honest we seemed to know more about it than she did. It was a similiar experience in Altamura. A lovely resident escorted us to a couple of points of interest and the local bakery. The bakery in Altamura was to die for. Anticuus Fornus Sancta Clara di Vito Macella. Foccacia was amazing and the local bread which looked like it was burnt was sensational. Felt sorry for the other 2 participants as they had booked a private tour and were lumped with us. Overall disappointing as we could have used public transport and booked a guided tour in Matera.

Response from the operator: Ciao Susan I am sorry that the tour did,t satisfy you. I will talk to Palma to understand what happened. Usually our customers appreciate the tour where Palma is the guide.thank you

Tour of Matera and Altamura: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Bari.

How much does Tour of Matera and Altamura cost?

    +

Prices start at $450 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Bari usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Tour of Matera and Altamura take?

    +

Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Bari is not rushed.

Is Tour of Matera and Altamura worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 17 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Bari, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Tour of Matera and Altamura?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Tour of Matera and Altamura suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 6-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Tour of Matera and Altamura?

    +

Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Bari can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Bari and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Tour of Matera and Altamura start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Bari within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Bari?

    +

On Outty we rank every Bari experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Bari’s Ultimate Street Food Tour - Small Group by Do Eat Better, Boat Tour of the Polignano a Mare Coast with Aperitif, Polignano a Mare: Boat Tour of the Caves - Small Group. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Bari?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Bari?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
