    About this experience

The ancient town of Herculaneum was an holiday resort for patricians, built on a promontory overlooking the bay of Naples. Traditionally founded by the mythical hero Hercules, it was the site of rich residences among them being the famous Villa of the Papyri. The guided tour starts near the ancient beach, where excavations have recently unearthed the bodies of about 300 victims. Then you enter the city to visit the main houses, thermal baths and shops incredibly preserved and protected by the pyroclastic flow that brought them to us.

Herculaneum tour with an archaeologist is an essential way to really understand the culture through its ruins

Ilaria really came through for us! We reached out on short notice and she arranged a tour with Paola(an archeologist like herself) of Herculaneum. The tour was excellent! We learned so much about the culture/society through the ruins and artifacts. We will definitely contact Ilaria when we can go back and tour Pompeii! Thank you Ilaria!!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much! I wait for you next time.

Excellent 5 Star tour with an outstanding Tour Guide

Our guide, Ilaria, was simply the best and highly recommended. A few days before our tour, she had contacted me direct by email to introduce herself and give details of where exactly to meet her on the morning of our tour, to which I replied, telling her a little about myself, family and our interests. The tour itself proved a delight! Ilaria is a born communicator, engaging, highly knowledgeable, welcomed questions and proved v good company as we explored Herculaneum together. More than this, we got both her personal insights as a working archaeologist and particular enthusiasms: the things that have truly captured her imagination amid the myriad wonders of this truly awe-inspiring ancient site. Thank you Ilaria for a truly magical and inspiring tour of Herculaneum. Highly, highly recommended.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing your experience in Herculaneum with me. I wait for you next time to explore other interesting sites in Campania!

    Great guide and interesting place

Knowledgeable guide who knew the history and made it interesting. Can tell she has been doing this a long time and enjoys it. It was very hot and she did her best to minimize that.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much!

    An Excellent Tour with Luciano.

Luciano Leone was our guide and was excellent. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and engaging throughout the tour. As an archaeologist, Luciano gave us detailed insights into the site, the work done and how people lived there. I would thoroughly recommend a tour with him. The sire is worth visiting, but a knowledgeable guide such as Luciano makes it excellent.

Tour in the ruins of Herculaneum with an archaeologist: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Naples.

How much does Tour in the ruins of Herculaneum with an archaeologist cost?

    +

Prices start at $240 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Naples usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Tour in the ruins of Herculaneum with an archaeologist take?

    +

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Naples is not rushed.

Is Tour in the ruins of Herculaneum with an archaeologist worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 66 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 34 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Naples, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Tour in the ruins of Herculaneum with an archaeologist?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Tour in the ruins of Herculaneum with an archaeologist suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Tour in the ruins of Herculaneum with an archaeologist?

    +

Around 12 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Naples can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Naples and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Tour in the ruins of Herculaneum with an archaeologist start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Naples within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Naples?

    +

On Outty we rank every Naples experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Full Day Private Amalfi Coast Tour from Sorrento/Naples/Salerno, Caserta Royal Palace & Gardens Small Group Tour with Shuttle, Naples Pizza and Tiramisu Cooking Class. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Naples?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Naples?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
