The tour to the Lodo del Totumo Volcano is a short but very fun and different experience: you travel from Cartagena to a small mud volcano, climb up a staircase and get into a crater full of warm mud where you float without sinking, you are massaged with the same mud and completely covered while laughing and taking photos; then you go down to a nearby lagoon to have the mud removed with fresh water, you come out relaxed, with soft skin and a very good story to tell

Cancelled without notice
We received a cancellation notice the evening before and were told we could rebook or wait 7-10 days for a refund.
Response from the operator: We as the tour operator did the right thing we canceled the reservation so as not to give her a bad service, it is not possible for us to take her to see the pink sea if for reasons of bad weather a lot of rain in the area, the pink color that is the most important thing had been lost, it is not fair that they pay for something that does not have its most important attraction that is the pink color do not have it, so to be honest you give us a bad rating it seems unfair to me. The refund of your money does not depend on us, it is a procedure that is in charge of VIATOR

Pink photo Ops
The Pink Sea tour was a good experience. Carlos was our driver and he was Great, he didn't speak much English but he made good efforts at communicating with us. Our ride was pleasant and safe. This tour was beautiful and amazing to see the pink hue of the sea as well as briefly feel the sea water on our skin. However the guide speaks no English and the only way to translate was via Google with spotty wifi but she did her best. We had a private car but no wifi as listed. FYI: We received our bottle water, you pay to use the bathroom and to enter the pink sea on top of tour price. The time to travel is included with the 4 hrs total. You really only spend 45 mins or so at the pink sea as there is not much to do However the sea speaks for itself and I would still recommend this tour.
Response from the operator: Thank you very much for taking the time to give us your opinion, this helps us to improve , we must adjust some details so that the driver effectively speaks English ,and can communicate with you ,we will take it into account to improve , I hope you enjoyed the pink color in the Sea.

Never Showed Up--Never Called--AWFUL GROUP
I cannot say enough BAD THINGS about this group. We booked and paid for it well in advance. This tour was supposed to be our 1st activity on our 1st full day. No one showed up or bothered to call. A nice English-speaking tour driver outside our hotel heard us discussing the situation with the doorman. He asked if he could call the company directly which he did. The person that answered the phone and the driver himself seemed to know nothing about it--nor did the apologize in any way. STAY CLEAR OF THIS GROUP AND THIS TOUR. Since this was our initial Cartagena experience, it could easily have ruined our entire trip. Thank heavens for the English-speaking tour driver who helped us out. Because of his kindness to us we hired him for the rest of our unbooked time and dinners. He truly made our week! So good can come out of bad--but no thanks to this awful tour group!!!!!!!!!!
Response from the operator: Unfortunately we could not take you to the sea that day , because we had confirmed with the area and did not have the pink color to take you ,if we had gone with you we would not be giving you a good service , what we did was to cancel the reservation and refund 100% of your money , for this reason I do not understand your annoyance due to the fact that we were very sincere with you not to deceive you and take you to the area and , show you a sea that was not pink which is what you wanted to see , you should thank the honesty of the company to return your money , in the message we sent you we previously explained the situation the day before and apologized to you , of course we apologize for not taking you to the area and for not taking you there.

A great substitute tour
The morning of the tour, Luis emailed us to inform us that because of recent rains, the pink sea would not live up to its advertised charm, so rather than take us on a disappointing adventure, he offered to refund our money or to take us on a private tour of Cartagena. We opted for the private tour and he took us to all the usual sites, but also to Getsemani, a wonderful artist enclave that had spectacular murals on all the buildings and neat art cooperative shops throughout. He tailored the day to our wants and needs, and it was perfect. We appreciated Luis’s willingness to refund the scheduled tour rather than take us on a long, disappointing journey. Although we did not get to see the Pink Sea, we felt we were given a good alternative.
Response from the operator: Thank you very much for taking the time to give us this excellent opinion, as I told you, you have one more friend in Cartagena, I hope to see you soon so that your stay is longer and you can enjoy this beautiful city more

Cancelled for a good reason
The tour operator canceled the trip due to bad weather. I appreciate that it was cancelled instead of us having a miserable time in pouring rain. I am waiting for my refund! The tour operator assured me that it would be done soon. 🤞
Response from the operator: Good morning, yes indeed, in order not to provide you with a bad service and due to the bad weather in the area, we decided to cancel the Tour to the Pink Sea, we hope that your refund will arrive soon, the procedure for this has already begun

Why this scores 47
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Totumo Volcano: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cartagena.
How much does Totumo Volcano cost?
+
Prices start at $50 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cartagena usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Totumo Volcano take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cartagena is not rushed.
Is Totumo Volcano worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 47 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.6/5 across 15 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cartagena, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Totumo Volcano?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Totumo Volcano suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Totumo Volcano?
+
Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cartagena can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cartagena and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Totumo Volcano start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cartagena within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Cartagena?
+
On Outty we rank every Cartagena experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Historic Center & Getsemaní Shared Tour in Cartagena, Cartagena Antigua & Barrio Getsemani group with audio system, Cartagena VIP Boat Tour: Rosario Islands & Snorkel. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Cartagena?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Cartagena?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
What is included in Totumo Volcano?
+
Included: Private transportation; On-board WiFi; Bottled water; In-vehicle air conditioning; and Parking fees. Not included: Alcoholic beverages; Native guide; Gratuities; and Entrance fees. Always check the voucher for the final list before you travel.
Does Totumo Volcano include hotel pickup?
+
Yes, pickup is offered for every traveler from 7 listed pickup locations in and around Cartagena. Be ready about 20 minutes before the start time. You can also enter a custom pickup address when booking.
What languages is Totumo Volcano offered in?
+
It is offered in German, English, French and Spanish. Pick your language when choosing a date and time, as not every departure runs in every language.

+
Confirmation is sent by the operator after booking, usually within 48 hours; if it is not confirmed you are not charged. Mobile tickets are accepted, so you can show the voucher on your phone.
