About this experience

Observe and participate actively in the journey that starts with dried corn kernels and ends with the tortilla itself. Make tortillas under the guidance of a true expert and learn the ancient technique of Nixtamal. This is a unique “only in Mexico” experience with hands-on learning and corn deep-dive knowledge. If you’re a home cook who wants to learn more about Mexican food, or you’re simply curious about an ingredient that cuts across all areas of Mexican gastronomy, this experience is for you. Corn tortillas are the bedrock of Central Mexican cooking, but several native Mexican corn strains are now in danger of disappearing. In this workshop and class, you’ll learn the history and importance of Mexican corn and what’s needed to save the heirloom strains from extinction. Also, learn how to make salsa in a molcajete (ancient volcanic stone mortar).

Must Experience for Tortilla Lovers

Clara was the absolute best! Ask for Clara when you book. She brings a wealth of knowledge and insight into the nuanced history of corn and masa preparation in Mexico, going back 10,000 years. My group learned how to make real tortillas from scratch by soaking the corn, and then grinding it using a real metate. The most aromatic and best tortillas of my life. Thank you Clara!

Response from the operator: Hi Frances. Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are very happy to have Clara teaching the tortilla class. Her experience and passion for Mexican cuisine make her a great teacher.

A must do for a culturally curious food lover drawn to authentic, traditional cooking.

This corn tortilla making class was an absolute highlight of our trip to Mexico City! Ariane was an exceptional host and instructor—knowledgeable, warm, and genuinely passionate about sharing the history and technique behind traditional corn tortillas. From learning about nixtamalization to grinding the masa and pressing tortillas by hand, every step was hands-on and engaging. Ariane explained everything clearly and made the experience fun and accessible, even for complete beginners. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and we truly felt immersed in Mexican food culture rather than just attending a cooking class. Best of all, the tortillas we made were fresh, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying to eat. This experience was educational, authentic, and delicious. If you’re interested in Mexican cuisine and want a meaningful, memorable activity, we cannot recommend this class with Ariane highly enough!

Corn Tortillas !!

Clara was so knowledgeable and kind. This hands-on class is a must do in CDMX. We learned so much about corn tortillas. We ate the corn tortillas we made in the metate, then we ate corn tortillas we prepared from the mása from a mill, and finally we ate corn tortillas using Maseca harina. The ones we prepared ourselves on the metate were the best buy far. I will never buy generic corn tortillas again. Thank you Clara!

Super fun for families

This cooking class was perfect for kids, and informative for adults as well! My daughters (9 and 12) loved grinding the corn, and seeing their tortillas cook on the griddle. Our teacher, Clara, was filled with knowledge about corn, cooking, and food. We enjoyed it, and we learned a lot!

Mexican cooking glass

A group of five of us enjoyed our foray into preparing and cooking Mexican food which we then devoured while chatting to our lovely host. So much tasty food. Can highly recommend!

Tortilla Class and Workshop in Mexico: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Mexico City.

How much does Tortilla Class and Workshop in Mexico cost?

+

Prices start at $1675 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Mexico City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Tortilla Class and Workshop in Mexico take?

+

Plan for about 1.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Mexico City is not rushed.

Is Tortilla Class and Workshop in Mexico worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 8 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Mexico City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Tortilla Class and Workshop in Mexico?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Tortilla Class and Workshop in Mexico suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 12. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 1.5-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Tortilla Class and Workshop in Mexico?

+

Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Mexico City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Mexico City and add a light layer if any part of the 1.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Tortilla Class and Workshop in Mexico start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Mexico City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Mexico City?

+

On Outty we rank every Mexico City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Frida Kahlo VIP [Museum Tickets Included] Walk, Markets & Churros, Local Foodie Adventure CDMX: Tacos & more with Sherpa Food Tours, Mexico City Historical Centre Food Tour with 7 Tastings & Drinks. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Mexico City?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Mexico City?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
