What you'll see and do

  1. Thang Long Water Puppet

Generations ago, Vietnamese puppeteers performed for their rural communities in waist-deep water, bringing to life legends and stories about their region. Water puppetry theaters like Thang Long Water Puppet Theater continue that tradition into the modern day and are a fun, family-friendly way to experience a hallmark of traditional Vietnamese culture. With the entrance ticket you have the chance to relish in the fascinating art of a water puppet show, which is closely associated with the spiritual life of Vietnamese people, especially in the countryside. The show’s chosen stage is the surface of a water pool. The puppeteers present their clever skills in managing puppets by long bamboo rods and string mechanism under the surface. A traditional Vietnamese orchestra is an excellent music accompaniment. The puppets depict the story from the songs during the show, which reflects the peaceful life of the Vietnamese countryside, so it is not too difficult to understand it.

Complete Scam!

Scam! Advertised its in Ho Chi Minh City but actually in Hanoi! This is false advertising and they stole my money!

Fun puppet show. Confusing way to pick up tickets

The puppet show is a must do when in Hanoi. It’s unique and the puppeteers are amazing. However, getting the tickets when you buy through Viator is kind of a mess. It would just be easier to walk up to the window and buy the ticket without going through a third-party. Trust me you can do it and there’s no confusion or trying to find the right place to get your ticket. Show up with cash in hand and get a ticket and go right on in – – easier than ordering here.

Don't buy from this operator it's a scam

They listed this show in the Ho Chi Minh City page of another performance that is similar; there was no sign that it was in Hanoi; in fact, it was intentionally misleading to steal your money. The operator knows of this mistake, obviously and they intend to make money on this confusion.

Good show. Less ideal ticket experience

Interesting show. Getting ticket and to seats was confusing and a bit chaotic. Purchases a VIP first four rows ticket but was but in 5th row all the way at end with partially blocked view, even though many of the seats in the first four rows were empty and available. I also purchased an English tour at 145 pm that was cancelled and i was offered a 3 pm and assured it was the same thing, but when I arrived, they told me that the show was only in Vietnamese and I would need to pay extra for an audio guide (which I didn’t do and really didn’t seem all that necessary). I would probably go straight to the theater if possible and purchase my ticket there.

water puppets in Hanoi

Water puppets are form of art unique to Vietnam. The puppetry is entertaining even if you can't understand the language, and the live music is amazing. I recommend catching a show at least once if you ever have the chance.

Thang Long Water Puppet Theater Entrance Tickets: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Hanoi.

How much does Thang Long Water Puppet Theater Entrance Tickets cost?

+

Prices start at $9 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Hanoi usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Thang Long Water Puppet Theater Entrance Tickets take?

+

Plan for about 1 hour from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Hanoi is not rushed.

Is Thang Long Water Puppet Theater Entrance Tickets worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 42 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4/5 across 17 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Hanoi, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Thang Long Water Puppet Theater Entrance Tickets?

+

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is Thang Long Water Puppet Theater Entrance Tickets suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 4. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 1-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Thang Long Water Puppet Theater Entrance Tickets?

+

Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Hanoi can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Hanoi and add a light layer if any part of the 1-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Thang Long Water Puppet Theater Entrance Tickets start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Hanoi within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Hanoi?

+

On Outty we rank every Hanoi experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Ninh Binh Day Trip from Hanoi with Tam Coc or Trang An & Mua Cave, Ha Giang Loop Tour 4 Days 3 Nights with Ha Giang Vision Tour, Halong Bay Day Tour With Titop Island, Cave, Kayak & Lunch. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Hanoi?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Hanoi?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
