Built in 1914, the spherical steel drum tower was designed to hold 50,000 gallons of water in the of 8m wide water tank . The distinct red structure stands at just over 27.5m tall. The spherical design of the water tank is based on a German design and was partially imported from Europe. The distinctive onion shape of the tower dominates the hill on which it sits, North-East of the Johannesburg city. The unusual design of the Yeoville Water Tower and its elevated, prominent position make it a landmark structure in the Johannesburg suburban skyline.

Absolutely loved this experience!
We did the Yeoville Food Tour with Dlala Nje and honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Our guides were wonderful — so warm, friendly and knowledgeable, and they made us feel completely comfortable from the moment we met them. We were also pleasantly surprised by how safe we felt throughout the entire tour. We were walking through a part of Johannesburg that we would normally never have ventured into on our own, but with our guides we felt completely at ease and could really enjoy the experience. And the food was delicious! We tried so many different things and, at the same time, learnt a lot about Yeoville, its history, its different communities and the people who live there. It gave us a perspective on Johannesburg that we simply wouldn’t have got from the usual tourist experiences. What makes Dlala Nje particularly special is that the money also supports their work with children and young people at the Ponte Tower community centre. Knowing that our experience was contributing to something so positive made it even more worthwhile. We had the greatest time and would 100% recommend this tour. If you want to see a different side of Johannesburg, eat great food, meet lovely people and learn a lot along the way — do this tour!

Taste of Africa Tour will remind all Joburgers there is a vibrant street culture in the city! Do it!!!
The Taste of Africa Food tour was such a wonderful time and way to experience another side to the city. We had 4 stops and walked around Yeoville in between. Also met some great people who were also on the tour with us. (1) first, a delicious grilled Cameroonian fish and plantain. (2) Followed by a walk around an African food market. (3) Next, delicious Ethiopian food. (4) And ending in a South African meal at a cool bar. All washed down by cold beers. The Northern Suburbs of Joburg often feel dead at night, given mall culture etc. This was such a welcome reminder that there is a vibrant street culture in the city, if you venture beyond the usual spots. Thank you Delight, Alvaro, Mbosingenj, Mangqliso and Simthandile!
Response from the operator: What a lekker review! We're so stoked that you enjoyed the food, culture and vibrant energy of Yeoville. We'll be sure to pass your compliments on to Delight, Alvaro, Mbongiseni, Mangaliso and Simthandile. Thank you for supporting our community programmes. We hope to host you again soon!

Amazing Immersive experience of Johannesburg
We did the Taste Of Africa Foodie Tour around Yeoville and it was extraordinary! Mangaliso and Mbongiseni were incredible guides that took us to 3 different stops to try food from Cameroon, Ethiopia and South Africa. Food was phenomenal and we got to experience Johannesburg as a local for a couple of hours! They also showed us Ponte Tower and explained some of its history. Needless to say, our guides made us feel extremely safe every second of the tour and happily answered any doubts we had. Would 100000% recommend!
Response from the operator: Thank you for joining our Taste of Africa experience! We're thrilled you enjoyed exploring Yeoville through its incredible food and culture. We'll be sure to pass your kind words on to Mangaliso and Mbongiseni. Thank you for supporting our community work, and we hope to see you again soon for another Dlala Nje adventure :)

Why this scores 69
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Taste of Africa: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Johannesburg.
How much does Taste of Africa cost?
+
Prices start at $59 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Johannesburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Taste of Africa take?
+
Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Johannesburg is not rushed.
Is Taste of Africa worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 13 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Johannesburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Taste of Africa?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Taste of Africa suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Taste of Africa?
+
Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Johannesburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Johannesburg and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Taste of Africa start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Johannesburg within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Johannesburg?
+
On Outty we rank every Johannesburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Soweto and Johannesburg Exclusive Full Day Guided Tour, Ultimate Johannesburg Soweto Experience with Apartheid Museum, Full Day Ultimate Pilanesberg National Park Safari from Johannesburg or Pretoria. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Johannesburg?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Johannesburg?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
What is included in Taste of Africa?
+
Included: Dinner. Always check the voucher for the final list before you travel.
Where is the meeting point for Taste of Africa?
+
Entrance to the tower is at the end of lily avenue, it looks like a dead end but the black entrance gate is on the left. Tell security you are here from Dlala Nje and they will point you to the welcome centre Hotel pickup is not included, so plan your own transport and arrive 15 minutes early.
What languages is Taste of Africa offered in?
+
It is offered in German, English and French. Pick your language when choosing a date and time, as not every departure runs in every language.
Will I get instant confirmation and a mobile ticket for Taste of Africa?
+
Confirmation is sent by the operator after booking, usually within 48 hours; if it is not confirmed you are not charged. Mobile tickets are accepted, so you can show the voucher on your phone.
Is Taste of Africa wheelchair or stroller accessible?
+
The operator notes: Not recommended for pregnant travelers. If accessibility is critical, contact the operator after booking to confirm arrangements for your date.
