Tahiti Cross Mountain Tour
Bumpy, at times misty and rainy, but you're traveling into the mountains of Tahiti, into the clouds. Fantastic experience, good view of nature, beautiful waterfalls.

Island Tour
Nice trip to see the inner part of the island. Unfortunately, we couldn't cross the entire island as advertised in the intinerary due to a landslide which blocked the road and had to go the same way back as we came after half of the tour. Nice scenery, but no views across the island. Most of the time the tour will follow the valley road. Higher up the mountains it gets cold and rainy (prepare for it!). Lunch can be bought at the supermarket just before the tour starts.

4x4 Island crossing trip
Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. We stopped at a delicious bakery to pick up lunch, and although the trip was incredibly scenic, we unfortunately encountered drizzly rain and misty conditions. As a result, we weren’t able to see the lake or enjoy a swim. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic trip, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. And yes, the road really is as potholed in parts as suggested!

It was amazing. Our tour...
It was amazing. Our tour guide was really nice and catered to both English and French speakers. He was very informative. Definitely a must do, to see more of Tahiti. The drive was very long but definitely worth it. Would 100% recommend.

spectacular
The visit was scenically spectacular, even in less than perfect weather. Above all, it gave a flavour of the real Tahiti, which is nowadays obscured by the urban bustle of Papeete and the coastal sprawl that surrounds the island’s exterior. Pick-up was prompt and in the exact spot advised. First stop was to an excellent bakery: I had brought along my own vegetarian sandwiches just in case, but needn’t have bothered, since nice veg lunch options were on sale at the bakery. I was the last to join the group so had the front passenger seat of the 4x4 instead of an open-air place on the back of the truck. But the view was still good, and I had a more comfortable ride, given the very poor state of the road across the island (37 km of very bumpy and mostly single-file dirt track). After skirting the north coast for a few km we turned inland, climbing almost immediately. We had many ‘programmed’ photo-opportunity stops, and the guide was happy to stop anywhere on request for a photo, or to let passengers take a quick toilet break in the greenery. The picnic stop was beside a plunge pool where members of the group were able to go swimming, and the guide provided fresh fruit to accompany the otherwise self-paid lunch. The route crossed many fords, skirted river valleys, pencil waterfalls, green lakes and the high peaks of the caldera. We traversed the spooky road tunnel in the centre of the island, saw freshwater eels and passed by one of the island’s main hydro-electric plants. Mosquitoes and other biting insects were hardly noticeable. For the expert driving, knowledgeable guiding and fabulous scenery the trip was well worth the expense and totally safe. The only drawback was that advance communication with the company was a little haphazard, and they seemed to have lost my reservation and pre-payment, though this was eventually sorted out.

Tahiti Safari Islander 4x4 Discovery, Expedition, Adventure, Mana: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Papeete.
How much does Tahiti Safari Islander 4x4 Discovery, Expedition, Adventure, Mana cost?
+
Prices start at $140 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Papeete usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Tahiti Safari Islander 4x4 Discovery, Expedition, Adventure, Mana take?
+
Plan for about 6.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Papeete is not rushed.
Is Tahiti Safari Islander 4x4 Discovery, Expedition, Adventure, Mana worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 84 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 550 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Papeete, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Tahiti Safari Islander 4x4 Discovery, Expedition, Adventure, Mana?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Tahiti Safari Islander 4x4 Discovery, Expedition, Adventure, Mana suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 6.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Tahiti Safari Islander 4x4 Discovery, Expedition, Adventure, Mana?
+
Around 193 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Papeete can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Papeete and add a light layer if any part of the 6.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Tahiti Safari Islander 4x4 Discovery, Expedition, Adventure, Mana start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Papeete within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Papeete?
+
On Outty we rank every Papeete experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include 5 Hours Tahiti Island Tour - West and East Coast, Moorea 4WD Tour: Magic Mountain, Belvedere, Pineapple Road & More, Moorea 6-Hour Snorkeling and Lunch Shared Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Papeete?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Papeete?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
