About this experience

If you visit Matera in summer, the heat may discourage you from visiting the Park, and it would be a great shame! That's why I offer my dawn tour, which requires a small initial sacrifice but pays off with a truly invigorating and aesthetically unique experience : The schedule is still flexible and if you really don't want to wake up before sunrise, this tour can still be done early in the morning. You are picked up comfortably at the Hotel by the NCC service (not provided by the Guide but by an external company), you walk together and walk back to the Sassi crossing the "Tibetan" Bridge in an experience that combines history, nature, views, fitness and a pinch of adventure!

What you'll see and do

  1. Sassi di Matera

Waking up just before dawn, in summer, allows you to visit the Murgia Materana Park in the coolest hours and with the most beautiful light to take photographs. On the other side of the Canyon of the Torrente Gravina you can see the entire view of the Sassi and you can understand the historical and natural context in which they are set. From the starting point of the walk we will walk along the edge of the Gravina and then arrive at the first viewpoint just before sunrise and admire the city as it lights up with golden light. It continues among churches, caves, racking and dry stone walls, with views that change at every turn and a tale about nature, science, history and traditions. Once you reach the top of the Belvedere plateau, you have a packed breakfast and go down on foot into the Canyon reaching the Sassi on foot.

+

On Outty we rank every Matera experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tour in the Sassi of Matera with Casa Grotta and Rock Church, Sassi di Matera guided tour with Giulio, Discover Matera, the ancient city - English tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Matera?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
