What you'll see and do
St. Peter's Basilica
We’ll be entering the church early, at the quietest time of the day. There is no way to skip the lines at St. Peter's, but while there may be a short queue even at this time, you won't have to wait too long before entering! When in Rome, climbing the iconic dome of St. Peter’s basilica is an absolute must, and this is how our in-depth St. Peter's tour will begin. On our itinerary you’ll get the lowdown on this miracle of Renaissance design: discover how an aged Michelangelo was inspired by the Pantheon to conjure the world’s tallest dome to crown the massive new centrepiece of the Catholic faith in the 16th century, and get a unique up close and personal look at the dome as we make the thrilling climb upwards. We’ll finish our in-depth St. Peter’s tour with a journey downwards into the atmospheric grottoes beneath the church. In these underground crypts, generations of popes have been laid to rest from as far back as the fifth century.

Loved this tour so much. Thank you TE tours and Claudia!
We booked our week long trip to Rome about 4 weeks before our plane took off. I did my homework and prepared a loose itinerary. There’s so much to see and do and, we didn’t want to miss out by not booking a tour in advance or going with the wrong company. Tons of helpful advice out there - on this site and others that led me to Through Eternity tours and I’m happy to report I made the right choice. Thank you all who posted your reviews ;) We chose TE because they had the exact tour we wanted - Basilica with the Dome climb, early morning to avoid crowds (even tho this was December, it was the shoulder week to the start of Jubilee 2025). Claudia met us outside at 7am. She is a Roman herself and joyfully shared her wealth of knowledge about this historic influential breathtakingly beautiful site. The tour guides complete a 4 year education and then must pass a licensing test. They are lovers of art and history. Claudia made this 3 hour tour a highlight for these two American tourists and we are so grateful. For the Dome climb, we took the optional elevator up part way. Claudia let us take a break at the restrooms and then allowed us 40 min to complete the climb and return to her. Plenty of time to move at our own pace! There is so much to take in I highly recommend you do book this guided tour. There are other things in the city you can explore on your own and save the money.

“St Marks Basilica night tour” Excellent! Gina/tour guide was wonderful: enough information and presented very clearly.
This review is for the St Marks Basilica twilight tour with “Gina”. Excellent experience, especially later in the day. Gina was informative, and engaging. It was the perfect amount of information from an experienced guide.
Response from the operator: Thank you for the lovely review! We’re delighted that Gina made your St. Mark’s Basilica twilight tour so enjoyable. Exploring in the evening adds such a special atmosphere, and we’re glad her insights made it memorable. Grazie mille for joining us!

Sadly disappointed
Gentleman guide was lovely and the tour would have been just fine had we been provided with headphones. The company failed to deliver headphones to our group. The vastness of St Peter’s causes voices to be lost. We were a small group of only 6 people; me and my husband plus 4 other guests. Yet, nobody was able to hear much of what was said. To my dismay we were not given any compensation for the poor service. Disappointed in Through Eternity and would probably not book with them again.
Response from the operator: Thank you for your feedback, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced. We understand how frustrating the lack of headphones must have been, especially in a venue as vast as St. Peter’s. Please reach out to us directly at office@througheternity.com, and we’ll be happy to assist you further. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and hope to improve your experience in the future.

Why this scores 55
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
St. Peter’s Basilica with Dome Climb and Crypts Small Group Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rome.
How much does St. Peter’s Basilica with Dome Climb and Crypts Small Group Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $45 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rome usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does St. Peter’s Basilica with Dome Climb and Crypts Small Group Tour take?
+
Plan for about 2.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rome is not rushed.
Is St. Peter’s Basilica with Dome Climb and Crypts Small Group Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 55 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.7/5 across 6 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Rome, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule St. Peter’s Basilica with Dome Climb and Crypts Small Group Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is St. Peter’s Basilica with Dome Climb and Crypts Small Group Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book St. Peter’s Basilica with Dome Climb and Crypts Small Group Tour?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rome can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rome and add a light layer if any part of the 2.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does St. Peter’s Basilica with Dome Climb and Crypts Small Group Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rome within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Rome?
+
Rome runs on skip-the-line access. The Colosseum underground, the Vatican before opening, and the catacombs south of the walls all require a licensed operator, and the price gap between the good ones and the rest is smaller than you would expect. We rank by guide credentials, group size and how reliably the promised access actually materialises. On Outty we rank every Rome experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rome Pasta and Tiramisu Class: Ravioli, Fettuccine & Fine Wine 5*, Pasta Making & Wine Tasting with Dinner in Frascati from Rome, Rome: Pizza & Tiramisu or Gelato Class with Flowing Fine Wine 5*. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Rome?
+
April, May, September and October. August is hot and half the city is shut. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Rome?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
