What you'll see and do
U.S. Custom House
Step back into the roaring 1920s, when Charleston was a hotbed of bootleggers, speakeasies, and federal raids. On this spirited pub crawl, we’ll uncover the city’s wild Prohibition-era past—starting with the imposing U.S. Customs House, once a stronghold in the fight against illegal liquor. From whispered deals on the docks to hidden bottles behind bar counters, you’ll explore how Charleston danced around the law—and raised a glass anyway. Cheers to rebellion, rumrunners, and the city that never stayed dry.

While best known for its soaring steeple and sacred history, St. Philip’s Church played a quieter role during Prohibition—as a rumored lookout point and meeting spot in the Holy City’s underground world of bootleggers and backroom deals. Just steps from where the law preached temperance, locals whispered about hidden stashes and secret sips. In a city where sacred met scandal, St. Philip’s stood at the crossroads of faith, folklore, and forbidden spirits.
24 minutes here
High Cotton, a beautifully restored former bank building in Charleston’s Historic District, is where elegance, wealth, and rebellion once collided. Named after the Southern phrase “living on high cotton,” this landmark reflects the prosperity of Charleston’s cotton-trade era and the lavish lifestyle of the city’s elite. But beneath the refined atmosphere lies a more controversial story. Local legend connects the building to the fiery temperance activist Carry A. Nation, famous for storming saloons with a hatchet during her crusade against alcohol in the early 1900s.
20 minutes here
Rudy Royale reflects a spirited history but behind its modern Southern charm lies a connection to one of the most controversial periods in American history - Prohibition. During the era of the 18th Amendment, when the sale and production of alcohol became illegal across the United States from 1920 to 1933, Charleston’s bars and backrooms transformed into hidden speakeasies where liquor continued to flow despite federal law. Charleston remains a city that resisted quietly, celebrates loudly, and keeps its spirits full behind closed doors.

Our tour guide Vannah was...
Our tour guide Vannah was amazing!!! So knowledgeable and passionate about Charleston history. She went above and beyond to provide a thorough, authentic, enjoyable tour. It flew by, we could have been out drinking and learning all day! I recommend to anyone visiting Charleston, even if you have just a short 2-hour window.

Meet some great people on...
Meet some great people on this tour and guide was very knowledgeable, only negative was we only went to two pubs/taverns and as tour is sold as a pub crawl I would have expected to have at least visited several more.

Would never do again
The worst experience I have ever had with tour company. We walked to the first bar. It was closed. The guide takes us to a liquor store and talks for 20 minutes in 86 degree weather. We walked to the next bar and it was also closed. So he decides to take us to the rooftop bar next, but before that he wanted to sit under a tree to give us his speech. None of this was part of the tour. It took 4 stops before we got to the rooftop bar and were able to get water. We were all drenched in sweat and thirsty. At the rooftop bar the guide said we would spend one hour while he continued his speech and then go to the next bar to check if it was open. There was no information about landmarks or speakeasy bars. The information on this tour is misleading and I do NOT recommend. I left after 45 minutes because it was excruciatingly hot at the rooftop bar and I was ready to pass out. This provider has refused to refund my money. I have tried multiple times to reach out and I even contacted Viator. I feel like I can’t trust either company again if this is how customers are treated.

Revel in the fun of Revelry Tours!
Great tour! Marco is a wealth of fun and knowledge. His command of the history of Charleston mixed in with the ambiance and vibe of all the local taverns, bars, and speakeasys we visited was exceptional! Highly recommend :-)

Speakeasy Sagas - Charleston Prohibition Pub Crawl: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Charleston.
How much does Speakeasy Sagas - Charleston Prohibition Pub Crawl cost?
+
Prices start at $35 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Charleston usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Speakeasy Sagas - Charleston Prohibition Pub Crawl take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Charleston is not rushed.
Is Speakeasy Sagas - Charleston Prohibition Pub Crawl worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 69 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.5/5 across 210 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Charleston, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Speakeasy Sagas - Charleston Prohibition Pub Crawl?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Speakeasy Sagas - Charleston Prohibition Pub Crawl suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Speakeasy Sagas - Charleston Prohibition Pub Crawl?
+
Around 74 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Charleston can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Charleston and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Speakeasy Sagas - Charleston Prohibition Pub Crawl start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Charleston within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Charleston?
+
Charleston's best experiences are small: house museum tours with an architectural historian, Gullah heritage walks, harbour sails at sunset and Lowcountry food crawls through the market district. Plantation day trips vary enormously in how honestly they handle the history, and our ranking factors that in directly. On Outty we rank every Charleston experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Charleston historical walking tour with a Professor of History at The Citadel, Historic Charleston Guided Sightseeing Walking Tour, Hidden Alleyways and Historic Sites Small-Group Walking Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Charleston?
+
March to May and September to November, the two mild shoulder windows. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Charleston?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
What is included in Speakeasy Sagas - Charleston Prohibition Pub Crawl?
+
