    Excellent tour- highly recommended.

We had a wonderful day with Gabriel our guide on our day trip to Soweto. Gabriel is a warm, thoughtful and knowledgeable guide who made our trip sparkle. We visited Nelson Mandela’s home and had lunch at a local restaurant serving typical South African food. We also experienced great street performances by different groups. Gabriel explained the history of how Soweto came to be and how it has changed over the years. We enjoyed having a beer in a local bar. We loved everything that we did but the most thought provoking and confronting part of our trip was the visit to Kliptown. I am so glad we went there, the people we met were so kind and welcoming and the children were gorgeous. Kliptown is the poorest part of Soweto and most tourists don’t go there. We saw how this community is working together to improve young people’s lives through creative industry. We highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to gain an understanding of Soweto’s history and its people.

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your lovely and thorough review. Your tour enables me to do the work I do in the Kliptown community and have the relationships myself and my guides have with the community. Warm regards Gilda

    Safari Sisters visit Soweto

The 4 of us were the only ones on this full day tour with Gabriel who did an excellent job tailoring it to our expectations. Gabriel was very personable, friendly and knowledgeable enhancing our day even more. The Itinerary is an excellent one as are all the community based guides. We saw and learnt alot from the very sobering sites of Hector Pieterson Memorial; and Mandela’s House; to the amazingly athletic and joyful Zulu dancers. We made some great purchases from the very helpful and friendly roadside vendors; and enjoyed our local lunch; and brew. From the outset of our booking from downunder several months in advance Gilda was very helpful. Gilda has since ensured that our 40+ brand new running tops donations were well distributed, which we appreciated.

Response from the operator: Hi ladies! Thank you for your lovely review. I'm very sorry that I was not available to meet you, but glad that you enjoyed your day with Gabriel, who certainly loved guiding you. Thank you once again for your thoughtful and kind donation. I can't wait to share some photos of the runners! I hope you'll visit our beautiful country again. Warmest regards Gilda

    A must do!

This was one of the best tours we have ever done anywhere! Our guide Gabriel was amazing, introducing us to the culture, some customs and practices of the locals. The tour showed that the people of Soweto are resilience personified! We enjoyed a local beer and traditional lunch, met local kids making the most of what they have! Highly recommend this tour!

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your lovely review Carole, also for supporting my Gobla boys. We hope to welcome you and your daughter back to our friendly city in future

SOWETO: much more than just museums! Engaging while giving back: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Johannesburg.

How much does SOWETO: much more than just museums! Engaging while giving back cost?

    +

Prices start at $117 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Johannesburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does SOWETO: much more than just museums! Engaging while giving back take?

    +

Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Johannesburg is not rushed.

Is SOWETO: much more than just museums! Engaging while giving back worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 79 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 62 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Johannesburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule SOWETO: much more than just museums! Engaging while giving back?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is SOWETO: much more than just museums! Engaging while giving back suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 6-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book SOWETO: much more than just museums! Engaging while giving back?

    +

Around 22 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Johannesburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Johannesburg and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does SOWETO: much more than just museums! Engaging while giving back start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Johannesburg within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Johannesburg?

    +

On Outty we rank every Johannesburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Soweto and Johannesburg Exclusive Full Day Guided Tour, Ultimate Johannesburg Soweto Experience with Apartheid Museum, Full Day Ultimate Pilanesberg National Park Safari from Johannesburg or Pretoria. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Johannesburg?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Johannesburg?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
