About this experience
Sowcarpet is Chennai's most famous food street and one of the greatest places to eat in India. Traders from across the country settled here generations ago and brought their food traditions with them. The result is a single street where you can eat Murukku sandwich, a uniquely Chennai invention, then Lassi made by a former wrestler, then freshly fried Jalebi from a stall serving the neighbourhood for decades. This guided street food walk takes you through Sowcarpet for two hours with a food evangelist who knows every stall and every story. You will taste signature dishes from legendary local stalls, walk through frenetic lanes brimming with spices, flowers and colour, and eat the way Chennai actually eats rather than the way tourists are usually fed. 5 Senses Tours is recognised by the Ministry of Tourism of India and a member of the Indian Association of Tour Operators. Every walk employs local guides and supports local food businesses, ensuring your food spend stays in the community.

We move to Anmol Lassi centre, a place run by an ex professional wrestler, Dinesh Soni. He has been quenching the thirst of visitors to Sowcarpet for the last 30 years. The signature offering is Kesar lassi which is a sweet and creamy drink made with non-sour curd. I Saffron and sugar top up the ingredients. Served chilled in large glasses, the lassi also get a few drops of dried cream.

The food walk ends at the most famous chat shop of Sowcarpet called Kakada Ramprasad. Six decades since the classic Kakada jalebi was first fried in the quaint corners of Mint Street, the legacy of Kakada Ramprasad has come a long way. We will savor Aloo Tikki which is a magic of the blend of mashed potatoes and the traditional Indian spices. This will be followed by Jalebi, the dessert for all seasons.

Immersive street foods adventure!
Superb street food experience. I totally recommend this tour for anyone looking to try street food and experience a night market vibe. Totally immersive. We were there on the day of wholesale market day - the place was hopping. It can get intense for anyone not use to it but we love it as was able to join in with the massive crowd ie crossing the road challenge 🤣. Food - amazing selection and we were very full to the end. We skipped lunch to prepare for the tour and still got so full towards the end. We had jigarthanda, samosa with yummy sauce, dokhla, muruku sandwich (our best favorite), vada pav, masala papad, pani puri, aloo tikki, jalebi and lastly onion uttapam with ghee and podi (the best and personal favorite). Neeshanth our guide was a gentleman and explain the foods to us with great detail. It was also great to know that he knew the market well as part of his own personal life - really a local experience. Do not fret about any hygiene issues - we were a group working in healthcare and was happy to try everything in confidence. Spice level is perfect for us. I recommend arriving 30-60min ahead to browse around yourself if you want to do some jewellery shopping (Sowcarpet is famous for bridal shopping) prior to starting the tour. 5 stars!🌟

Perfect experience!
Absolutely amazing experience with Neeshanth. I've travelled loads across Asia over the past 15 years and I'm always totally comfortable doing something like this on my own, but I admit I struggle in India because of how intense things can be. This tour was perfect though! It took me to places I would have never found myself, eaten things I would have chosen, and just roaming the streets with an expert made the whole experience incredible. Neeshanth's knowledge about different foods and history of the area was really impressive too. And we ate so much food, so much food I couldn't possibly eat any more!

A bustling, lively night market
My guide, Ganesh, was very friendly and considerate. We stopped for many different food items, snacks, and beverages. I particularly enjoyed the saffron buttermilk and the Jigarthanda. The area was just a bit too crowded for me on this very hot night, but it was great to be able to see something different. We drove by Marina Beach on the way back to my hotel, which was a nice ending to the evening.

Really nice walking food tour
Really nice guide. I've already tried a lot of south Indian food and he made sure I was trying new things. I ate a lot of food. Enough to equal a large meal.

Wonderful friendly guide!
Ganesh was great, he was able to accommodate my quite stringent dietary requirements, having a diary allergy in India is no joke, had great chat and made sure I got back to my hotel safely

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Chennai.
How much does Sowcarpet Street Food Walking Tour in Chennai with guide cost?
+
Prices start at $31 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Chennai usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Sowcarpet Street Food Walking Tour in Chennai with guide take?
+

Is Sowcarpet Street Food Walking Tour in Chennai with guide worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 83 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 109 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Chennai, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Sowcarpet Street Food Walking Tour in Chennai with guide?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Sowcarpet Street Food Walking Tour in Chennai with guide suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 3. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 2-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Sowcarpet Street Food Walking Tour in Chennai with guide?
+
Around 38 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Chennai can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Chennai and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Sowcarpet Street Food Walking Tour in Chennai with guide start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Chennai within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Chennai?
+
On Outty we rank every Chennai experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mahabalipuram tour by Tourism Ministry approved company, Chennai tour in car with guide-winner of traveller's choice award, Gods of Mylapore walking tour: Journey Through Living Traditions. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Chennai?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Chennai?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
