Best SoCo food tour ever!
Michael and I had such a fantastic time on Robby's tour of SoCo. We started at the candy shop and then snaked our way down South Congress, eating delightful bits at every place we stopped: tacos, pizza, kolaches, ice cream, matcha. I have lived in Austin for two years and eat out a lot, but Robby showed me places that I had never been to before. He is very knowledgeable about the businesses he took us to and told us great insider stories. It felt like hanging out with a friend for the day. We ended the day with live music. I couldn't have asked for a better tour! Thank you, Robby!

In signing up for the...
In signing up for the food tour, my number was concern was eating well. Rob did not disappoint. We visited seven locations on South Congress, and all of them were excellent. I had authentic tacos, ice cream from a famous Austin based business, excellent kolaches, and much more. We visited the most famous places on the SOCO food map; Rob did not skip any major stops. Rob also introduced me to hidden gems and local hole in the walls that I knew nothing about. Not only did Rob arrange for a guided tutorial led by staff at each of the locations, he was extremely knowledgeable about the history of each venue, about south congress and, about the places that we passed by along the strip. I am very satisfied with the dining experience. We never had to wait, the service was always efficient and friendly, each stop was organized. Rob stayed on budget and I felt extremely full at the end. He included a tip at the end of each meal. It was very pleasing to be a passenger and led Rob take the wheel, pay for everything, and make the decisions. He asked me many questions, and made an effort to learn about what I wanted out of the experience, and then tailored the experience to my preferences. Rob has friends everywhere in Austin, so we got behind the scene, back stage access and insider exclusives several times during the three hours. It was a lot of fun to meet the locals! The tour ended with dancing and a live band, and Rob is an excellent dancer. I learned that he also gives dance lessons, and it was so kind of him to show me a few steps. Definitely a bonus. Rob is a renaissance man, a jack of many trades. He is enormously personable, he never gets in the way of conversation, and is extremely easy to be around. He is funny, sensitive to his clients needs, interested in their background and accommodating. The other food tours in Austin are corporate with headquarters in the north east, outside of Austin. HQ organizes the tour, having only visited the city once or twice and the tours often skip the best food stops, or order the wrong things on the menus (sandwiches at Home Slice? Are you serious?) They make you walk four times the length necessary because of miscommunication between head quarters and staff, it can be very exhausting. Rob provides a streamlined, organized, highly informed experience. He is the only serious option.

I didn't understand food tours until Authentic Austin! 10 out of 10!
Robby with Authentic Austin Experiences made my Sunday morning stroll on South Congress so much more entertaining than I every thought it could have been as a local. It was cool to hear of the background of each place we visited, such as the background of the owner of Big Top Candy shop as a collector, and having their employee point out the candid old mermaid piece that was nonchalantly hanging on the wall but had once been in a museum. Robby also took bold moves to take advantage of sights I would have usually walked meekly past. Such as when John Greyhorse (a famous Native American) was spotted riding his horse up South Congress and he was waved down to greet us. In general, the tours seem to have a positive reputation, which make you feel like somewhat of a celebrity getting special treatment throughout the experience. Of course, the food options were delicious! I especially enjoyed the experience of getting a small bite of many different foods. You would be surprised how much more tasty half a slice of pizza from Home Slice could be in the midst of a long food tour, rather than simply sitting down for one large greasy meal as per usual. It felt so exciting to have so many choices too! Never have I had a delicious latte from inside an expensive Maufrais, and then galloped down the street to have a non-alcoholic but oh sooo fresh lime-y margarita from Guero's Taco Bar. I was also impressed with how Robby was able to accommodate different food preferences, from the vegetarians in the group, to the Canadian more interested in checking out Texas Barbecue...we all got what we wanted and stayed within the tour time frame (you know how some guides can get carried away with time...this one makes sure you get what you pay for and have the rest of your day as well!). The pacing of the tour felt so comfortable between all the jokes and hits of candy and tacos that I was sad when it was over, but now I am excited to invite visitors with me for the next tour!

Why this scores 68
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
South Congress Austin Food Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Austin.
How much does South Congress Austin Food Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $100 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Austin usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does South Congress Austin Food Tour take?
+
Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Austin is not rushed.
Is South Congress Austin Food Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 68 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 13 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Austin, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule South Congress Austin Food Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is South Congress Austin Food Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book South Congress Austin Food Tour?
+
Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Austin can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Austin and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does South Congress Austin Food Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Austin within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Austin?
+
Austin's activity list runs on food and water: barbecue crawls to the pits that sell out by noon, Lady Bird Lake kayaking under the Congress Avenue bat colony, live music walks on Rainey and Red River, and Hill Country wine and distillery runs. We weight timing detail in the ranking, because a barbecue tour that arrives after the brisket is gone is a different product entirely. On Outty we rank every Austin experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include From Austin: Hill Country BBQ & Wine Shuttle, Best of Austin Small-Group Driving Tour with Local Guide, The Escape Game: Epic 60-Minute Adventures in Downtown Austin. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Austin?
+
March to May and October to November, avoiding the triple-digit summer. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Austin?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
