Expensive crowded commercial experience
We visited Veragua Park as part of a cruise ship excursion from the port of Puerto Limon. The entrance road is rough but the bus was comfortable enough. The guide in the park was informative without being over-the-top. The park was busy so we ddi feel we were always being moved along to a schedule. I would have preferred longer to look at the wildlife. The boardwalks and paths are ,mainly easy to negotiate, but this covers mainly captive fauna. The butterfly house was extremely warm. We saw some wild species including snakes, spiders, and monkeys. The guide helped us spot creatures and also pointed out where there could be danger. The short cable car ride in the treetops took us down to the river. It is a reasonable but not great short ride. Walking to the waterfall is on uneven paths with steps but there are hand rails and it was not a challenging walk and only 300 metres or so. There were lots of people, so it was difficult to photograph the waterfall. It is quite small and there was little flow in the river. Our trip included lunch in the on-site cafe and this was reasonable with a vegetarian option. There were toilets at the entrance and in the butterfly house. There are longer "hiking" trails but these need to be arranged with a guide. This was an expensive commercial experience fitting with a cruise shift agenda. We enjoyed it but if we were travelling independently we would look to visit a different eco park.

Fun rainforest with many activities
Veragua Rainforest Park is a 200-acre tropical rainforest that is said to be one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. My husband and I visited this park through a cruise line. We started with walking through exhibits of native frogs and snakes. Then we walked through an enclosed butterfly garden. Then we rode a sky gondola through the treetops. Then we walked along a path, seeing birds and sloths, to a waterfall. Then we listened to a brief presentation about conservation in a research lab. Finally, we ate a meal in the cafe, and I purchased a couple souvenirs in the gift shop. Our tour guide was friendly and informative. My husband and I greatly enjoyed this excursion.

An Excellent Taster Of The Rainforest
We had a nature walk and aerial tramway tour as part of an included excursion from a cruise ship. The drive up was quite long and the last few miles interesting in the size of coach we were in! Thankfully, they must be very organised because we didn't meet anything coming the other way. The centre is simple, open-sided and blends in well with the environment - there are toilets and water stations for visitors after the drive. We were split into manageable groups and then embarked on, in sequence, a nature walk under the canopy, a visit to the butterfly enclosure (really special) a guided tour of the reptile house (I sat out that one!) and then a ride on the aerial tramway, which took us down, down, down and then , by following a path and - be warned - a fair number of steps - the a waterfall. The guides / rangers were all knowledgeable, enthusiastic and committed to the preservation of their environment. Coming from the aerial tramway and before we were served a simple but tasty and very welcome lunch, we watched a video presentation about the work being done to look after the ecosystem and animals of the rainforest. There was a small shop within the open-sided restaurant but no pressure at all to buy anything. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and felt that they had done their best to build the visitor centre, whose aim is, of course, to raise funds for their work and to bring in visitors, without negatively impacting the environment.

Not one of the better national parks in Costa Rica.
This was the most expensive walk in the woods I've been on, and it was a 15 km drive down an unmade road to get there. You can't just do the trails at Veragua, it has to be a guide led tour which makes it expensive straight away ($84 each!). Still we thought we might see more wildlife with a guide, but no, one Toucan, one snake, one lizard, a spider and a couple of humming birds was about all. The tour includes the sky gondola which is a couple of hundred meters cable car down into the valley and then a walk to the waterfalls, also only a couple of hundred meters, hardly hiking trails. The tour also includes seeing the captive animals, frogs snakes and butterflies in their enclosures. The guide was informative but the short length of the experience and the not so abundant wildlife was disappointing. The guide also sticks around with you in the overpriced restaurant area to make sure that you don't wander off an try to do any of the trails on your own. Had much better experiences in Cahuita, Arenal and Manuel Antonio national parks.

Would Recommend - Toni was a great guide
We visited on 12/28/2025 from the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship. Our guide was Toni Brown, and she was great. We would highly recommend this tour. The bus was nice; the driver did a great job on the mountainous roads. We got to see lots of fauna: sloths, monkeys, birds, snakes, frogs, butterflies . . . everywhere we went (on the boats of the Tortugero Canals, inside the Veragua Rainforest preserve, even along the road from the bus). The meal provided at the Veragua Rainforest café was very nice. There were plenty of stops at good restrooms throughout the day. We really enjoyed the skytram over the canopy inside the Veragua Rainforest ecopark. Again, hats off to Toni, who was a great tour guide!
