About this experience

It is a very relaxing experience while enjoying the scenery by overlooking both Sigiriya and Pidurangala Rocks. You can decide which session (morning sunrise/evening sunset) you want to experience depending on your travel plan. We are using a catamaran and you can sit on the deck before starting the activity. Up to 6 members can sit comfortably on the deck. I will be providing life jackets for your safety. I will tell you the stories about the history behind Sigiriya and Pidurangala when those places were occupied by the King Kashyapa (473-491 AD) and also by the monks. Pidurangala was the mein temple in 5th C.AD therefore a lot of activities happened in between Sigiriya and Pidurangala. We can discuss those as well while enjoying the vibe. Also you can observe about 40 water-birds along with their behaviours. We can take a note or list down their names by looking in the bird guide book. The scenery is the main attraction of the boat ride. It is really beautiful!

Authentically beautiful

We really enjoyed this experience. We did the sunrise boat ride and it was so worth getting up early for. Birds are just waking up and you hear a lot of them chirping. We saw a lot of different birds and a water monitor. Our guide Thusitha was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. He provided a brief description about each bird and we could also use binoculars to look at them. We were provided with authentic Sri Lankan red millet pancakes and tea for breakfast. Thusitha also taught my daughter to make a necklace from a water lily. It was such a peaceful and authentic experience that teaches you to appreciate simple things in life. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting this part of Sri Lanka.

Response from the operator: Hi Elena, Thank you so much for your 5-star rating and for being an amazing part of our journey. We are glad you enjoyed our services. We sincerely appreciate your business and your valuable feedback.

An absolute must do in Sigiriya

An absolutely incredible experience. We were a group of 3 and went on the boat with this experienced tour guide and a gentleman who rowed us around for sunset. As soon as we got out on the water, our guide Thusitha instantly began pointing out a large variety of birds, some found only in Sri Lanka. He had a book with him to show us which birds we were seeing, along with some excellent refreshments (fresh pineapple juice and biscuits). We slowly made our way around the lake and Thusitha gave us some great history of Sigiriya. We eventually ended up under a tree to watch the sunset. Despite the rain and cloudy sky, we still got a gorgeous glimpse of the sunset. The view coupled with the beautiful sounds of the birds, it was truly an unforgettable experience and would highly recommend.

Response from the operator: Hi Ravi, Thank you so much for your 5-star rating and for being an amazing part of our journey. We are glad you enjoyed our services. We sincerely appreciate your business and your valuable feedback.

A very special morning!

We were taken out to the lake early doors by our lovely guide, Thusitha! It was pitch black when we left and the bird noises were incredible. As it got lighter, we were then able to see all the lovely birds and nature. It was a very peaceful and beautiful experience. Thusitha also made some delicious pancakes and coffee for us which we enjoyed onboard. We would definitely recommend this ❤️

Response from the operator: Hi Olive, Thank you so much for your 5-star rating and for being an amazing part of our journey. We are glad you enjoyed our services. We sincerely appreciate your business and your valuable feedback.

Magical morning with the birds

Perfect early morning - when we went on a simple catamaran boat and glided on a lake. With tea and coffee and sandwiches. And simply watched as the birds appeared. We heard them before we saw them as they had started their morning cackles. As the light got bolder, we began to see the colors and details of these birds - the very still egrets, the darters, the fishers and the bee eaters. Thank you to our guide and our boats man who made this such an incredible trip. Worth the early morning wake up!

Response from the operator: Hi, Thank you so much for your 5-star rating and for your recommendation. I am so glad you enjoyed my services. I sincerely appreciate your business and your valuable feedback. Visit us again!

Sigiriya Sunrise/Sunset Guided Boat Ride: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Sigiriya.

How much does Sigiriya Sunrise/Sunset Guided Boat Ride cost?

+

Prices start at $20 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Sigiriya usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Sigiriya Sunrise/Sunset Guided Boat Ride take?

+

Plan for about 1.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Sigiriya is not rushed.

Is Sigiriya Sunrise/Sunset Guided Boat Ride worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 64 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 8 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Sigiriya, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Sigiriya Sunrise/Sunset Guided Boat Ride?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Sigiriya Sunrise/Sunset Guided Boat Ride suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Sigiriya Sunrise/Sunset Guided Boat Ride?

+

Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Sigiriya can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Sigiriya and add a light layer if any part of the 1.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Sigiriya Sunrise/Sunset Guided Boat Ride start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Sigiriya within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Sigiriya?

+

On Outty we rank every Sigiriya experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Sajee’s Place Cooking Class sigiriya, Private Jeep Safari at Minneriya National Park to Visit Elephants, Organic cooking class sigiriya (kumara & family). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Sigiriya?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Sigiriya?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
