About this experience
Enjoy a truly magical day shore excursion from Bari to two awe-inspiring tourist destinations. Matera: This town has two old districts called Sassi (meaning stones) that in 1993 were declared a world heritage site because they represent "the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem". Owing to its timeless setting this town of stone has been the backdrop for several movies including Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ”. Alberobello: The historic centre of this town is also a Wold Heritage site due to the existence of its’ trulli, of which there are about 1,500. These unique buildings with conical roofs are made of dry stone (without mortar) and have survived intact and fully functional up to the present day. On this tour you will find out about the history, architecture and the mystery and symbolism of their finials. You will love the atmosphere of this fairytale hamlet.

What you'll see and do
Porto di Bari
A local driver in a comfortable air-conditioned van will pick you up from your cruise ship dock and take you first to the charming city of Matera where you will mett your local guide and visit the two Unesco site - Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano. This is a truly unique experience among rupestrian (carved in the rocks) churches and houses that are actually partly carved out of the calcareous stone and partly built with blocks extracted from the rock. Then you enjoy a stroll along the panoramic street that overlooks the canyon and wander through the ghost town that has been used as a movie set on several occasions. We visit one (or more) rupestrian church and typically furnished cave dwellings to get a feel of what life was like for a peasant family here up until the 2nd World War.

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Bari?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Bari?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
