Disappointing private excursion that felt like a standard Viking included tour.
We booked a private tour in Indonesia with friends with the understanding that we could customize the experience for 5–7 hours and explore more unique, off-the-beaten-path locations. The tour guide was very nice and friendly throughout the day, which we did appreciate. However, despite requesting several times to see places different from the typical Viking cruise included tour, we were taken to the exact same stops. This made the private tour feel redundant and not tailored to our interests. It was disappointing, especially since we had clearly communicated that we wanted something more unique and less tourist-focused. Only at the very end of the tour did we visit a beach, which felt like a last-minute addition rather than a thoughtfully planned part of the experience. We also felt that safety and attentiveness could have been improved when crossing busy streets with heavy scooter traffic. The guide only assisted us once in these situations, which did not feel adequate given how chaotic and potentially dangerous the traffic can be. On a positive note, the lunch stop was excellent. The food was absolutely delicious, and the restaurant was a highlight of the day. Overall, while the guide was very kind, we would not recommend this tour if you are expecting a personalized private experience, especially if you are on a Viking cruise. You would likely see the same places on the included tour. We actually took another private tour the day before with a different guide, and that experience was completely different—much more customized, with hidden gems and a true behind-the-scenes feel, which is what we had hoped for here.
Response from the operator: We’re sorry that the tour did not meet your expectations. We understand that comparing it with the cruise’s included tour may have been disappointing. However, compared to similar shore excursions offered by other cruise lines at a significantly higher price, our private tour is generally considered a good value. We would also like to clarify that the main destinations included in the itinerary are listed in the product description. While the tour is private and allows for some flexibility, it is still based on these highlighted stops. During the tour, our guide did try to offer alternative and more unique experiences, such as visiting one of the oldest coffee factories in the area; however, we understand that this option was not of interest to your group. THank You

My friend and I spent the day touring Semarang with Nane. She was a very pleasant and knowledgeable guide. We very much enjoyed our time with her. We also enjoyed the foods that she selected for our lunch.

Great day with Moon in Semarang
Moon was a fantastic guide for the day. The trip was fun and educational. I think the highlight of the day was when he took us to an antique shop. We all had fun exploring. We also enjoyed the Chinese temple we visited and even got to see a dance with dragons. Moon also sent us a lovely video of our day when we were done. He was so nice. It was a wonderful day!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your lovely review! 😊 We’re very happy to hear you had a fun and educational day with Moon. It was truly a pleasure welcoming you during your visit with Holland America Line (Westerdam) on 31 December. Thank you again for choosing us, and we hope to see you again in Indonesia!

Great into to Indonesia
Laila was a charming, knowledgeable guide ready to answer our myriad questions and explain her country's past and present... and much better at staging photos than this couple of seniors!
Response from the operator: Thank you for your kind words! We hope to welcome you again on another adventure!

Why this scores 75
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Semarang Private City Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Semarang.
How much does Semarang Private City Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $55 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Semarang usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Semarang Private City Tour take?
+
Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Semarang is not rushed.
Is Semarang Private City Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 75 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 19 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Semarang, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Semarang Private City Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Semarang Private City Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 17. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 5-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Semarang Private City Tour?
+
Around 7 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Semarang can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Semarang and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Semarang Private City Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Semarang within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Semarang?
+
On Outty we rank every Semarang experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Jakarta Half-Day Sightseeing Tour To Modern City and Old Town, Mount Bromo Sunrise Private Trip, Jakarta Heritage of Old Batavia Private City Tour (Historical). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Semarang?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Semarang?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
