Enjoy a day out at the Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. This product gives you an unique conversational audio guide and an electronic guide with full guides notes. Total flexibility and at your own pace. The Rila Monastery is located in 1147 meters altitude in the middle of the fragrant coniferous forests of Rila Mountain. The monastery is a complex of cultural, dwelling and farming buildings which take about 8800 square meters. The Rila Monastery has an unique architecture. Outside, the monastery looks like a fortress. It has 24-meter stone walls which forms irregular pentagon. That’s why when some tourist enters the monastery’s yard from some of the two iron gates he is surprised by its architecture: arches and colonnades, covered wooden stairs and carved verandas and the 300-400 monastic cells.

The best way to visit the Rila Monastery.

We had a wonderful time in the Rila Monastery. We bought a combined ticket that give you access to everything except interior photos. But the best of the whole tour was our driver, Martin, who is very kind, patient, knowledgeable of the surrounding area. We highly recommend Martin if you book this tour or the 7 lake tour.

3,5 Minuten Audio Guide, mehr war nicht dabei, kein Eintritt, Nichts. Danke für gar nichts, nicht empfehlenswert

Hello, I am very dissatisfied with Viator because, contrary to their promises, there was no entrance fee to the Rilak Monastery and the 3.5 minutes of the audio guide for over 20 euros is simply not enough. If you do not refund me a large part of my money, I will rate you accordingly and also mention NEGATIVE in all of my travel reports. With kind regards, Klaus P. Nut

If you want to visit the Rila monastery thats a gem

We used the car rental to reach the sight. And this activity is a real gem we found out. All the guides notes and audio in our pockets. Extremely nice!

    Doesn’t work

They don’t accept it. They make you buy another one. I guess I was confused to how it works Spoke to Viator said supposed to just download on phone but in a lot of area not allowed to have phone out

Response from the operator: Hello Kelly, Your review is totally misleading as you had everything on your email and tried asking other companies on the spot which is a mistake at your side. We exchanged so many emails. Of course if you ask another company on the spot they will charge you as they did, they, not us. From us you had everything duly sent to you and operative but you seemed to be not doing it! You can of course use on phone on the spot as all the other people. Given all that you put a 1-star review to something and you cannot get to work. We could hardly think of anything more simple than that. This is truly the best way to experience the sight which you totally missed. Best regards, Hristo

Self Guided Tour Experience in Rila Monastery: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Sofia.

How much does Self Guided Tour Experience in Rila Monastery cost?

    +

Prices start at $12 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Sofia usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Self Guided Tour Experience in Rila Monastery take?

    +

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Sofia is not rushed.

Is Self Guided Tour Experience in Rila Monastery worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 49 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3/5 across 16 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Sofia, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Self Guided Tour Experience in Rila Monastery?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Self Guided Tour Experience in Rila Monastery suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Self Guided Tour Experience in Rila Monastery?

    +

Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Sofia can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Sofia and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Self Guided Tour Experience in Rila Monastery start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Sofia within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Sofia?

    +

On Outty we rank every Sofia experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Communist Walking Tour of Sofia, Sofia Highlights 2 Hour Sightseeing Walking Tour, Sofia Escape Room - Teorema Rooms. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Sofia?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Sofia?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
