About this experience

Athens is a city of hidden depth, where ancient relics and forgotten stories peek out from unassuming facades. On this self-guided audio tour, you’ll peel back the layers of the Greek capital to discover secluded squares, lesser-known historical sites, and atmospheric corners that most visitors never see. Your walk starts at Syntagma Square. You’ll weave through the elegant Kolonaki district with its upscale boutiques and stylish cafés, and explore the lush National Zappeion Garden. Along the way, you’ll climb marble staircases to hidden parks and discover neoclassical mansions tucked behind modest exteriors. As you make your way through the heart of the old Commercial Triangle, I’ll tell you about the magnificent public works that Emperor Hadrian built, transforming Athens. The tour ends at the unique Byzantine chapel of Agios Ioannis tis Kolonas, where an ancient Corinthian column – once believed to have healing powers – rises mysteriously through the roof.

Discover the mystery of Athens

I have been to Athens many times and have seen the more well-known places a couple of times by now. But this audio-tour gave me a new perspective and insight into the Greek capital. An amazing walk that made me feel like I was taking part in a secret filled with mystery and history. The audio guide not only tells you about the sites and hidden places, but also about the city areas you pass through on your walk. You will learn about everything from ancient water reservoirs to a hill known in literature as a place with "hidden powers", to the transformation of Athens into a modern capital, and much, much more. From now on -I will see the streets of Athens in a whole new light- aware that every corner carries its own secret history or hidden treasure. Thank you Greek Expedition! for your excellent work on this tour and for giving the rest of us the opportunity to take part in it. I highly recommend it to anyone going to Athens.

A Well-Paced Audio Tour With Hidden Gems and Moving History

This self-guided audio tour was a truly engaging way to experience a different side of Athens, away from the busiest tourist spots. The route is well thought out and the length is just right — not too long or tiring, making it suitable for most people and easy to enjoy at a relaxed pace. During the tour, I chose to take a coffee break at Dexameni Square, which turned out to be a very pleasant pause. The coffee tasted really good, and the atmosphere was incredibly cozy and authentic — a perfect moment to slow down and enjoy the surroundings. A particularly powerful and memorable part of the tour was the visit to the old detention center. It was gripping and emotional, adding real depth to the experience and reminding you of the city’s complex and often difficult history. Overall, this tour offers a thoughtful mix of history, hidden locations, and local atmosphere. A great choice if you want a meaningful walk through Athens that feels both personal and informative.

Off the beaten track in Athens city

Perfect tour if you want to see some lesser known interesting places in Athens. It takes you off the beaten track and gives takes you to landmarks that even many Athenians don't know about. The tour includes a short uphill and down hill walk, so wear adequate shoes. The greatest part of the tour is on flat, urban surface. Recommended.

Secret Athens: A Self-Guided Audio Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Athens.

How much does Secret Athens: A Self-Guided Audio Tour cost?

+

Prices start at $15 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Athens usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Secret Athens: A Self-Guided Audio Tour take?

+

Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Athens is not rushed.

Is Secret Athens: A Self-Guided Audio Tour worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 66 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 3 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Athens, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Secret Athens: A Self-Guided Audio Tour?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Secret Athens: A Self-Guided Audio Tour suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 6. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 2-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Secret Athens: A Self-Guided Audio Tour?

+

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Athens can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Athens and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Secret Athens: A Self-Guided Audio Tour start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Athens within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Athens?

+

On Outty we rank every Athens experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Athens Small Group E-Bike Tour, Small Group Greek Traditional Food Tour in Athens 20+ Tastings, Athens Scenic Bike Tour with Regular or Electric Bike + Acropolis. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Athens?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Athens?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
