Blue Ridge Parkway
As we drive along the parkway, you'll notice spots on the road where you can pull your vehicle to the side. These overlooks are designed to spotlight the mountains' most scenic vistas. There are over 200 of them along the whole Blue Ridge Parkway! Each one features a large wooden sign that lists the name of the mountain or ridge you're looking at, and your current elevation. It's nice to give a little personal touch to the otherwise anonymous and similar-looking mountains that you drive through. NOTE: This 550+ mile-long tour covers the essentials of Blue Ridge Parkway in 5+ hours. Buy once, use for one year! Ideal for extended visits and return trips over the next 12 months.

Welcome to the Blue Ridge Parkway! The scenic drive follows the iconic Blue Ridge–– that's what we call the eastern side of the Appalachian mountains. As you drive through scenic vistas of majestic mountains, we'll learn about the native Cherokee, the pioneer settlers, and Appalachian culture today. When you’re ready, exit the Visitor Center parking lot and turn left onto the main road.

If you look out at the ridge beyond, you'll notice a blemish on the landscape, where it looks like the surface of the mountain was scraped off. The scar resembles the aftermath of a landslide. And it kind of was a landslide…. a man-made one.

This land was once home to the Cherokee. No one knows exactly how long they lived here, but archaeologists have found artifacts dating back 11,000 years! The Cherokee refer to themselves as "Aniyunwiya," or "the principled people." But when Spanish explorers arrived, they recorded the name as "Chalakee" instead

Folks have reported seeing ghost lights–– dancing white orbs that have no known explanation. These reports aren’t new either. Some locals recall family stories of the lights that date back to the 1700s! At night, you may find dozens of cars parked along the side of the road, hoping to catch a glimpse of the mysterious mountain lights.

Big Witch was the name of a Cherokee medicine man. But Big Witch didn’t just mix poultices and perform rituals. He was also an eagle hunter! You might be thinking, what kind of doctor kills birds in his line of work? You see, eagle feathers were considered sacred, and they were necessary for healing ceremonies

The Plott name is still famous in the Appalachian region, but you’ll never guess why! Henry Plott's family immigrated here from Germany in the late 1700s. They decided to settle in the Blue Ridge Mountains with their children… and five German hunting hounds.

In the early 1700s, the Cherokee were at war. Not with the encroaching settlers, but with another tribe, the Shawnee. The two tribes were naturally separated by the Blue Ridge Mountain range, which kept them apart… most of the time

Cherokee Rose
From the Trail of Tears emerged the legend of the Cherokee Rose. The flower, in full bloom, features a cluster of snow-white petals surrounding a yellow center. In the story, each petal represents a band of the Cherokee nation, and in the center lies the gold for which their nation was torn apart. In order to access that gold, the white settlers had torn off all the petals.

Tons and tons of black cherry trees! In the early fall, thousands of birds are attracted by the ripe fruit on these trees. From here, you might also be able to see Looking Glass Rock. Parkway Closed from Hurricane Damage
I started the tour fine at the welcome center it seemed to work well but the portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway that I had purchased was closed because of damage from the hurricane. The company should have not had this available if the road is totally closed down.
Response from the operator: Elaine, I’m sorry you couldn’t fully enjoy my Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Driving Audio Tour. The North Carolina section was closed due to hurricane damage, while parts of Virginia reopened. I recommend checking NPS updates before visiting, and I'll be sure to add closure info for future customers. Don’t worry—my tour is valid for a year, so you can revisit anytime and explore the reopened sections!

Very helpful audio
The audio was good and provided useful information about stops coming up. I liked the stories they told about the blue ridge parkway and put four stars because I wish they told more stories and talked a bit more the history
Response from the operator: Jennifer, I'm glad you enjoyed the stories and history on my Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway tour. Please tell me what additional history or information you hoped for. I always want to enhance my tours with more engaging content in future updates. Also, check out the 'Learn More' section in the app for deeper insights on each stop. Simplicity:A Southern Blue Ridge Experience
We enjoyed the stories and tidbits about the Blue Ridge as we were traveling. It also pointed out small details about some of the overlooks that we would not have known. Having grown up near the Blue Ridge, there wasn’t a whole lot we haven’t seen but the tucked away parts that was shared on the app was worth the purchase. Like the tv tower on top of a high ridge which we couldn’t see because of clouds covering it and the small wooden walkway in the Taylor Forest. That did make the experience more immersive. I liked that it gave alternate things to view off the beaten place so to speak.
Response from the operator: Kim, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the stories and hidden details of my Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour, especially those tucked-away spots like the TV tower and the small wooden walkway in the Taylor Forest. It sounds like the tour added some great value to your trip! However, I noticed you gave us three stars, and I'd love to know what led to giving two stars less. Your feedback would really help me improve the experience.

Beautiful day bad experience!
After spending 2 wonderful night glamping we were excited about our self guided audio tour starting in Asheville. The audio started and we heard 3 points of interest. We reached out twice by phone for help. The audio cut out constantly. Keep getting message GPS not connecting/unavailable. Would not recommend.
Response from the operator: Hi Rebecca, the initial setup must be completed beforehand as it requires internet/Wi-Fi. Once downloaded, our app works entirely offline. It sounds like you may have been driving too fast, which caused the audio to cut out after only hearing three stops. The rest of your review is a bit unclear, so please email us ASAP so our team can look into it.

Do not use action tours
The company sent me to a wrong address for information They were not helpful This was the tour company not trip advisor I wasted almost 25.00 I would not recommend that company for tours
Response from the operator: We're sorry to hear you had a bad experience! We don't send folks off in the wrong direction, and there are three different versions of the Blue Ridge audio tour depending on which way you want to travel (Cherokee to Asheville, Asheville to Roanoke, or Roanoke to Afton). Our support team is also available from 5 am to 5 pm EST to help with any hiccups. Email us ASAP, and we'll gladly get you a refund or help you get started on the right track!

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Roanoke.
How much does Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $25 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Roanoke usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Roanoke is not rushed.
Is Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.8/5 across 30 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Roanoke, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour?
+
Around 11 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Roanoke can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Roanoke and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Self-Guided Driving Audio Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Roanoke within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Roanoke?
+
On Outty we rank every Roanoke experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Downtown Roanoke Food, History & Cultural Tour, 3-Hour E-Bike Sightseeing and Breweries Tour in Roanoke, Roanoke River Greenway E-bike Rental. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Roanoke?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Roanoke?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
