Imerovigli
The village of Imerovigli, also known as “The balcony to the Aegean”, is built on the highest point of the caldera cliffs, about 300 meters above sea level. It is situated at the north part of the island, 3 kilometers from the capital of Fira. Its position provides a magnificent view of the famous volcano, the sparkling Aegean Sea and the sunset that is out of this world. The notable attraction of the village is the famous, immense rock called Skaros that lies on the seaward side. It is of paramount importance since it was one of the five fortresses of Santorini and the most significant one. There are numerous churches and chapels in Imerovigli, among them the prominent church of Panagia Malteza and the chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti, built on the cliff edge in front of Skaros offering a unique panaromic view of the caldera.

Oia
Oia is considered the most picturesque village of Santorini and holds the position of the most visited spot for sunset viewing, as it provides an excellent view of the well-known sunset, probably the most famous sunset in the world. It is on the northwest coast of Santorini and it is built on the caldera slope. It is no wonder that a few movies have been filmed in Oia, for its beauty is unprecedented. It is a synthesis of white-blue houses and churches, with pink and ocher details, “hanging” on the caldera, composing a colorful canvas that is difficult to put in words. In Oia you can stroll in the charming narrow paths, visit shops, galleries and enjoy the atmospheric cafes, bars and restaurants. At the bottom of the village is Ammoudi Bay where there is a row of traditional taverns by the sea with local food. You can also swim there, in wonderful crystal waters with the breathtaking caldera view above you, if you take the small path that leads to a unique diving area.

Brisk morning hike. Our guide, Panos,was excellent!
We took the Caldera rim hike from Imerovigli to Oia. Our guide, Panos, was excellent. He was on time and was very informative on the hike. I learned much of the history of the island of Santorini along with the origins of the island and volcanic activity. The walk was at my pace, which is fairly brisk. The walk is mostly downhill, but there are some uphill parts as well. I would guess maybe 1/4 uphill and 3/4 downhill. So if you want an easier hike, plan to walk from Fira to Oia, vice Oia to Fira. Panos took many pictures for me to remember our trip. He has knowledge of certain areas that are best for photographs. If you are in the mood for a hike, Panos is a great guide and I highly recommend him.

Great way to be active on Santorini.
Our hike/walk was so enjoyable! Ask for Despina, she was a pleasure. She was prompt and prepared. She was very knowledgeable and knew the answers to all our questions. She was prepared with water(but bring your own) and snacks and gave us recommendations for restaurants when we asked. We started at 8:30am. If you are early birds like us, you might even want to request an 8am start. If it’s summer, do not start any later than 8:30am. If you are in decent shape, it’s not a very hard 6-7 miles from Fira-Oia(ours was a little shorter based on our hotel location). The pace can be leisurely and there’s just a slight elevation gain/loss. If you’re someone who feels guilty about all the delicious food you’re eating, this is a good way to burn a few calories. Sunblock, hat, water, good shoes/sneakers are a must.

If you’re looking for one of the best experiences in Santorini, this hike is a must! Our tour guide was incredibly wise, knowledgeable, and passionate about the island’s history, culture, and hidden gems. Every stop came with fascinating stories that made the scenery even more meaningful. The hike itself was a fantastic workout with breathtaking views the entire way. We also had plenty of opportunities to take amazing photos that we’ll treasure forever. It was the perfect combination of exercise, sightseeing, and learning. I couldn’t recommend this tour more highly—an unforgettable experience!

A great day!
Our tour guide Despoina was the absolute best! So knowledgeable about the plants, the history, and the culture of Santorini and Greece in general. She was entertaining and personable, as well as passionate. The hike was paced incredibly well for my sister, my aunt and I, and we stopped, Despoina had water and snacks for us, and the trail was great.
