100% Must Do
An incredible experience! There is a reason this tour has all and only 5 star reviews! We couldn't have asked for a better way to kick off our trip to Tokyo than this food tour with Simon. From start to finish, the experience was absolutely incredible. Simon is an exceptional host—he’s not only a fantastic conversationalist who made us feel completely comfortable, but he is also incredibly knowledgeable. He took us to a handful of hidden gems and truly unique spots that we never would have found on our own. What set this tour apart was the thoughtful curation; every dish and drink he ordered had a story behind it, perfectly tied to the history and culture of Tokyo. We left with full stomachs and a much deeper appreciation for the city. This was easily one of the absolute highlights of our entire trip. If you’re heading to Tokyo, booking a tour with Simon is a must!

You have to try this one before you die...
Simon has a wonderful vibe... Great PR, very social and looking to have a group great time in an excellent food experience. He lives in Japan for long long time... So you can expect the best. This tour is one of the best I have ever had... Topical drinks, topical food and surprising dishes very difficult to find. Congrats Simon. :)

Amazing food, drink and even better tour guide
We had the best time with Simon. We had amazing food and great drinks, and Simon’s personality made it even better

Tour of the back street bars and restaurants in Tokyo.
Hana was an excellent guide. She took us to restaurants/bars in the back streets of Tokyo that we would never have discovered on our own. She introduced us to foods and drinks that we may not tried on our own. Being on this tour felt more like going out with a friend than a guide. We were late in getting to the meeting point because of traffic delays but Hana was kind enough to wait as well as give the both of us a full evenings tour.

Can’t Miss!
This excursion, without a doubt, was absolutely a blast! We visited places that we would have never found on our own. Simon is a great host, and you soon see him as a part of your group rather than a guide. Lots of laughs, interesting drinks, and even more interesting foods. This is one experience that, if you like to toss back a drink or two, you should not miss if you’re visiting Tokyo! I’d do it again in a heartbeat…in fact, we did, once wasn’t enough! This is a can’t miss if you want something very unique.

Why this scores 73
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Sangenjaya Back Alleys Private Food and Drink Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tokyo.
How much does Sangenjaya Back Alleys Private Food and Drink Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $28481 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tokyo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Sangenjaya Back Alleys Private Food and Drink Tour take?
+
Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tokyo is not rushed.
Is Sangenjaya Back Alleys Private Food and Drink Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 140 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Tokyo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Sangenjaya Back Alleys Private Food and Drink Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Sangenjaya Back Alleys Private Food and Drink Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Sangenjaya Back Alleys Private Food and Drink Tour?
+
Around 49 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tokyo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tokyo and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Sangenjaya Back Alleys Private Food and Drink Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tokyo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Tokyo?
+
Tokyo is less a city than a stack of neighborhoods with completely different opening hours. A guided food crawl through Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho gets you past the no-tourist curtains, while the day trips west to Hakone and Fuji need an early start to be worth the fare. Our ranking weighs guide quality heavily here, because in Tokyo the guide is the product. On Outty we rank every Tokyo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tokyo Shinjuku Chopsticks Making Class, Tokyo : Asakusa Chopsticks Making Class, Shinjuku Night Food and Bar Crawl. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Tokyo?
+
Late March to May for blossom, October to November for clear Fuji views. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Tokyo?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
