Our team at Next Level Sailing provides the optimal experience with guides so experienced we received a 100 percent success rate during winter whale watching when spotting the King of the Deep. We are one of the best outdoor activities to do in San Diego. Gray whale watching season spans from mid-December through April. Blue whales and fin whales are seen feeding in San Diego from April - August. Humpback whales and minke whales are seen throughout the year, particularly in the spring, summer, and fall. Aboard our 141-foot sailing yacht, the Yacht America, you will see a plethora of whales firsthand in their natural habitat. In addition to whales, we also see dolphins and sea lions, and an abundance of naval activity. Don't be surprised if you see an F-18 fly overhead! Had a great relaxing cruise despite of not seeing a sea life out there.

This was a four and half hour whale watching cruise. I really enjoyed the cruise. It was relaxing, peaceful and I felt like all the stress and tiredness of the past several days went away with ease. Only real issue was....I didn't see a single whale, orca, dolphin or whatever out in the ocean. I did see host of naval helicopters and few flying fishes in the distance. Some people claims to have seen something but the rest of the boat did not. The schooner, America is a real treat and the boat was well helmed by its captain, Troy Sears who also owned the schooner. The schooner handled the water very well and the ship was well handled. I am pretty sure that he and the crew did their best to find something, but this is southern California, not Hawaii or Alaska. I didn't hold it against them for not finding what wasn't out there. Like I wrote earlier, I was enjoying the cruise and relaxing. It would have been nice to have a cold beer in my hand but even paradise got its limit. If Capt. Sears is reading this, my owl gave his best to you.

    Beautiful trip and great crew!!

We weren’t fortunate enough to see whales on our tour; however the boat is beautiful and the crew provided us with great information on whales and history. They also will allow us to book another trip at no cost. They tried hard to find us some whales but sometimes nature doesn’t cooperate. Did see sea lions, herons, cormorants, other birds, lighthouses and naval vessels. Thanks to Captain Troy, Fathom, Matt and Adrianna!!! I will be back!

    We didn't see any whales...

We didn't see any whales but still had a great time! It gets chilly, bring a jacket. Beer and wine available for purchase. Water, limited soda choices and small bag of assorted chips are provided. You can also bring your own snacks.

    Decent ride

Good experience from the boat perspective disappointed in not seeing what we paid for but it was still something to experience being on that giant sail boat instead of the other boats we have taken before not sure if or when we will be back to Cali but if we do we would probably give it another shot

Very fun and a great day on the ocean. Captain is very knowledgeable and the sailboat was beautiful, and I would definitely go again.

San Diego Whale Watching Cruise: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for San Diego.

How much does San Diego Whale Watching Cruise cost?

    +

Prices start at $85 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in San Diego usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does San Diego Whale Watching Cruise take?

    +

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in San Diego is not rushed.

Is San Diego Whale Watching Cruise worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 91 out of 100, which we label "90+ Club". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 2,540 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in San Diego, and how flexible the cancellation terms are. Scoring 90 or above puts it in the Outty 90+ Club, the top tier of everything we rank.

Can I cancel or reschedule San Diego Whale Watching Cruise?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is San Diego Whale Watching Cruise suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book San Diego Whale Watching Cruise?

    +

Around 889 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in San Diego can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in San Diego and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does San Diego Whale Watching Cruise start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central San Diego within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in San Diego?

    +

San Diego is an outdoor-first city: whale watching from December through April, La Jolla kayak and snorkel runs year round, harbour cruises and the USS Midway, plus Balboa Park museums when the marine layer sits low. We rank water operators on group ratios and gear quality, which is where the cheap La Jolla trips fall down. On Outty we rank every San Diego experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include USS Midway Museum Admission: Valid Any Date, Taste of Little Italy in San Diego, The Escape Game San Diego: 60-Minute Adventure in Gaslamp Quarter. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit San Diego?

    +

March to May and September to November, either side of the June overcast. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in San Diego?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
