    A Piece of Palenque

Some tours show you a place, but one let us step into it. The day began with a history lesson that set the whole tone. Hearing how Palenque came to be gave everything we saw afterward real weight. The people were friendly, the murals were beautiful, and the dance group had us right in the middle of the music, learning the moves alongside them. We watched how coconut candies are made, a tradition passed down by hand, and then sat down to a traditional lunch that was absolutely amazing. I would come back for that meal alone. Along the way, we learned some of the Palenque language and heard what daily life looks like there. That's what made it feel real. It wasn't a show, it was an invitation. Victor was an excellent tour guide and so very knowledgeable and hospitable. If you're looking for a tour that leaves you with more than photos, this is the one. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I definitely left with a piece of a Palenque forever in my heart.

    Palenque tour with Victor

This tour was excellent. Our tour guide was Victor. He was very informative and provided excellent customer service. He was empathetic toward my senior mother. He was accompanied by the driver Rodrigo and assistant/ photographer Christiano. They picked us up from our hotel in an air conditioned van and brought us back. We toured the town on foot but had the option to take the van. We enjoyed a variety of fresh fruit and had a full lunch with your choice of fish, pork or chicken. The fried fish was sensational served with plantations, avocado salad and white rice. I would highly recommend this tour!

    Incredibly Informative

Incredible experience with highly knowledgable tour guides. We had a tour of the whole town of Palenque and spoke to locals about what they do. We also saw a performance from the dance school. Sophia our guide was amazing!

Favorite Tour of My Cartagena Trip!!!

Our tour to Palenque was, without a doubt, one of the most meaningful experiences of our trip to Cartagena. It was so much more than a typical excursion—it gave us the opportunity to truly immerse ourselves in the culture, history, and community of Palenque. Our tour guide, Victor, was incredibly personable, welcoming, and extremely knowledgeable. What made the experience especially special was how genuine and personal he made everything feel. He even welcomed us into his family’s home and introduced us to his family, giving us a beautiful glimpse into just how tightly knit and connected their community is. The homemade lunch was absolutely delicious and added another layer to the experience. Everything felt authentic, intentional, and rooted in tradition. Connecting with the history and culture of Palenque—and learning more about the African heritage that is so deeply woven into the community—was incredibly meaningful. There was something powerful about seeing, learning, and experiencing this culture firsthand. We left with a deeper appreciation for the resilience, traditions, history, and sense of community that make Palenque so unique. If you’re visiting Cartagena, I highly recommend stepping away from the beach for a day and taking the time to experience Palenque. You’ll come back with more than just photos—you’ll leave with memories, knowledge, and a genuine connection to an incredible culture and community. Absolutely unforgettable. A must-do experience!

Response from the operator: Muchas gracias por el apoyo! No olviden hacer la tarea para que al volver sean 4! 😁😁😁

San Basilio de Palenque History Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cartagena.

How much does San Basilio de Palenque History Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $120 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cartagena usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does San Basilio de Palenque History Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cartagena is not rushed.

Is San Basilio de Palenque History Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 87 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 354 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Cartagena, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule San Basilio de Palenque History Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is San Basilio de Palenque History Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 6-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book San Basilio de Palenque History Tour?

    +

Around 124 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cartagena can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cartagena and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does San Basilio de Palenque History Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cartagena within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cartagena?

    +

On Outty we rank every Cartagena experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Historic Center & Getsemaní Shared Tour in Cartagena, Cartagena Antigua & Barrio Getsemani group with audio system, Cartagena VIP Boat Tour: Rosario Islands & Snorkel. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cartagena?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cartagena?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.

    +
